Stolen Equipment

I have noticed that a lot of people have had stolen equipment. I have the serial numbers of my equipment and have an alarm on my shop. It may seem excessive, but I would rather not lose my family heirlooms.

I keep pictures and S/N of everything of value. If it doesn't have a S/N I give it one. Started out as an insurance thing. Had a welder/generator go missing and the insurance agent sugested I do it in the future to protect myself.

Do you really think the thieves care about a serial number? If something is stolen and is hundreds of miles away, do you feel better because you have the serial number? Professional thieves can get around alarms and serial numbers pretty easily. It's good to have the serial numbers and pictures but there is tons of stuff stolen that is never recovered. Money has serial numbers too. Do you think that helps? Not everyone has a large enough shop to keep everything inside either. Hidden GPS devices are proving to be very good for recovering stolen property though. I guy up here had an $80,000 welding truck stolen and was able to drive right to it with the cops. Some of the hand tools were missing but he recovered about $78,000 worth of truck, welder and tools. Also found other stolen property at the same place.

My house was broken into last fall and the alarm chased them away. I got broken into at college and the serial numbers allowed them to get traced. I have had two cars stolen.

I have had a lot of personal experience, so maybe a little paranoid now.

The theives do not but if found even years later you can prove it was yours and get back if found, without that how do you prove ownership?
