Edelbrock 1405 - Edelbrock Performer Carburetors

I'm buying a carb for my 1974 F250 with a mildly warmed up 390. Does an Edelbrock 1405 Performer (600cfm) have mechanical or vacuum secondaries?

Thanks!

Well it is both. Full throttle opens both the primary and secondary butterflies and then air volume works on a flapper attached to weights and opens as the engine needs the air. Edelbrock is a very good and easy carb to set. good luck and By the By the 600 is what you need. Some will say it's a little small but it will do what you want to do just fine.

Why bother with a carb? They waste fuel and reduce HP. Install a fuel injection system that uses an O2 sensor if possible.
Doesn't cost that much more than a carb either.
So called fuel hog performance vehicles even with cam upgrades etc. They deliver surprisingly good throttle response, power and economy with a fuel injection retrofit.
Next step is to get rid of the three speed automatic or the four speed manual. And install a four speed automatic with lockup torque converter. Or a five or six speed standard with over drive.

B&D, are you feeling O.K.?

Fuel injection runs about $1750, a reman carb is in the $300 range...
The Edelbrock version of the old Carter AFB is a simple reliable design, no gaskets below the fuel level. There's a reason you see far more Holleys than AFB's...

Built a lot of 390's back in my younger days . Myself i prefer a holley with vac secondaries . And depending on cam and manifold vac. then ya know what power vale to use and depending on manifold you can stagger jet accordingly . I have found that you can tweak a holley alot easier . And yes you can get fuel mileage out of them and some serious pony power and torque . Built 3 for a buddy of mine , one went into a 68 Ford F100 Ranger hooked to a 4 speed and it would run the bag off GTX's . Then we built one for him that went into his 73 F250 4x4 and he gained 6 mile to the gallon over the stock 360 then in 75 i built one for his 75 F 250 4X4 . we could get around 17-18 mpg out on the road I use the 735 CFM Holley's found on the 428's and for cams we used several different ones that were in the performance book from ford. The one in the 68 had a 427 solid cam with the 1.73 rockers and the 428 police pkg manifold . There is somuch you can do with the FE blocks if ya have worked with them . Build my first one in oct 1963 And i am here to tell she would run . While i was stationed in Ga in 67 i shell we say supplemented my PFC pay with drag racing the locals . And the one old boy that i beat three for thre came up to me and asked if all them thar cars from Ohio were this fast , told him nope this was one of the slower ones. Plum STOMPED his 396 375 by five car lengths in the quarter .

Depending on the miles driven. The higher priced injection system will payback with improved mileage.
Throttle response will be snappier than a carb.
As the engine is already modified so it's safe to assume extra HP will be welcome. The fuel injection system will make more HP than a carb.

Tractor Vet, check out survivalmotorsports dot com. It seems the FE is making a comeback these days. Survival offers a stroker kit to make any ordinary 360 390 into a 445. I have a Tremec TKO 600 5 speed just waiting for me to finish the "Prison Break Special" from Survival to go into a 68 Torino fastback...

One thing that may help out in the fuel mileage is the Edelbrock 600 with electric choke is calibrated leaner from the factory than the 600 with manual choke.Yes it's true that the Edelbrocks are a copy of a Carter AFB but a cheaper copy. The Carters came with spring loaded needles and seats and the Edelbrocks dont. They do offer them though...and if you are gonna go offroad any, I highly recomend you install them or they will flood terribly. They do offer the AVS model which are copies of the Carter AVS and they are supposed to be more suited for offroad use but I don't have any experience with those so I cant offer any tips. But in general a well tuned vacuum secondary carb will always get better fuel mileage than a mechanical secondary because the vacumm secondarys only open when the engine load demands it..unlike the mechanical secondarys which open any time you mash the gas pedal far enough...

I would go with a 600 holley vac secondary hands down. You dont need anything bigger than a 600 on a 390,the smaller bores will give you more torque.Ive run both on 390s and the holley is easier to tune and you wont need a adj fuel regulater like the edelbrock. If it were mine id prolly run a 570 street avenger, they are sweet carbs.

I get 16 mpg in a 79 F150 with a 302....30 over...edelbrock 600 manual choke...edelbrock intake and 278 crane came. I had to richen the carb up some....it was lean when wound up all the way.
