Has anyone heard of this program or used it? It is FMCSA code 49 CFR 391.41(b)(1-13).I have a class A CDL and on insulin. I get a letter from my endrcrinologist for SOS office whenever I renew and it has worked. I do not have a medical card but drive intrastate, not for hire, only. With this new classification, I need to have a medical card even if elect the excepted category. I was planning on getting a GN trailer for my PU and maybe run border states with my own tractors, etc. I know I would need a DOT # for that. Am putting that on hold. I grandfathered into this. I have been driving for 50 years and diabetic for 32. This is an intimidating process that takes 3 months atleast. Its is getting interesting. Thanks, Frank

I have had diabetes for the last 25 years and drove 38 years for a commerical carrier. Mine is controled by diet and tablets.I have to get a DOT physical every year. I have a checkup with my doctor every four months. I was told that I would lose my CDL if I became insulin dependent. I know two drivers that lost there CDL becausse they went on insulin in the last three years.

If you can control your diabetes with pills you can get a medical card with little or no problems.
If you use a needle that is a different story. Use to be a complete no no but due to work by the ADA you can now get a waiver. It started with having to have 3 years experience but Bush signed a law that took that out. I have heard that needles will be the same as pills starting sometime in 2012 but do not know if the rules have changed yet.

It really comes down to your doctor. Feds say them self that the medical criteria is only a guide for doctors but it is up to the doctors for the final answer.
I know a guy that works with us that has cancer and is undergoing kemo every week. Our doctor talked to the driver and his cancer doctor and gave him a card. He drives for us 4 days a week and goes to kemo the other day.

Per the ADA 1,521 exemptions have been granted to date (as of 11/16/2010)
waiver

I have an insulin dot med waiver since 07.jump through the hoops do the paperwork call feds make sure you filled our correctly.after first waiver renewal process is a little simpler.go to endocrinologist every 90 days send paperwork in.

John some where around 8 years ago they tried letting driver on insulin have a CDL . They had take their sugar readings during the day and log them showing they were controled. It lasted about maybe 2 years and was stopped because driver were lying about their sugar readings and were involved in accidents because of very high or very low blood sugars.

d beatty- john in la,,,i have cdl-a also, was grandfathered in back when, last 2 years while not working , let myself go and my A1C were at 14, b/sugar over 400, doctor asked what date i have set-up for my funeral,,,WHAT?,,,,on pills to control sugar lever, metformin, A1C now around 9 and working to get lower,,,passed dot med phys l to drive, if i couldn"t get under control, doctor was going to have cdl revoked,,,it"s not something i/you should take lightly, got problem, get it taken care of ,,,don"t need to cheat out on road to kill my/your family...sorry if like/dislike my thread, but life is getting to short to loose my licence.. do what you must, its your life...

Bob keep on it with pills and diet it can be controled and you have to work with your doctor. I also took off 50lbs. and that helped a lot.The doctor caught mine early because dad and I went to same doctor and dad had diabetes. Doctor has me on Janumet and Glyburide and blood sugars stay around 89-115.Ten years ago doc put me on Lisinopril ( a high blood pressure med) but don't have high blood pressure using it to protect the kidneys. When I drove I carried a glucose meter with me all the time. Now that I'am retired I carry one of the mini meters on belt looks like small cell phone.Bob take care of the sugar so we can read more of your comments for many years to come.

I wonder how this would work for a type 1 on a insulin pump? I have a 7 and 5 year old and they want nothing more than to drive a big truck like the old man. I have to steer them down a different path before it's to late.
