Inline 6 cylinder tricks?

Looking for some manuals, advice etc. on how to add some "spunk" to my 1950 GMC 248.

Thanks in advance!

A cam. 3 carbs, and a split manifold used to do the job nicely. You should still be able to find the parts. Back then lotsa guys would put a hopped up "Jimmy" in a Chevy because they said the water jacket was better and they ran cooler. Never been the biggest General Motors fan, but I still love to hear a Chevy or Jimmy six with a split manifold and dual glasspacks! "Course, anything that old, I don't care what brand it is, I like it! Good luck.

Saw this at a car show and thought it might give you some ideas. Sounded healthy when it was running. Its just one of those things you dont see every day. Bandit

I also wonder if they didn't like the GMC having full oil pressure to the connecting rods where as the Chevy's had dipper rods.

Thanks fellas!!
The pic is something I am looking to do but not as much chrome. This rig will be a driver not trailer queen.

Everyone has a 327, 350 or 383 conversion done. I want to make mine like a 1950's style sleeper.

Yeah, what's with the V8 thing? I want an early 70's GMC pickup with the 292 straight 6 and 3 on the tree. On the few I've come across, they're always swapped out with a small block 350 and turbo 400 trans.

I am currently building a 292 for my sons 1950 Chev Pick up truck. When done he should be able to leave most any thing behind off the line. It is bored out 60 over has a performance cam made by PBM products. It will also end up with a 4 barrel carb on it and a few other tricks. Wish it was as easy to find stuff for them as it was back in the late 60s but seems every body wants them V-8s

Wish I could help on i6 and 3 on tree. I have a solid 1970 C10 with factory 350 and A/T sitting.

It needs a good home :)

My e-mail is always open on here so yes if you like you can e-mail me. Shoot if you do that we could even talk on the phone but I will never post that here LOL

You may also punch in "John Lingenfelter Racing & Performance" He probably won more NHRA races with altereds and dragsters powered by the GM inline 6 than anyone else. He was killed in a racing accident but he was and still is the best IL 6 builder ever.

They used GMC engines because they had insert bearings and full pressure systems. Chev didn't have untill 53 in the powerglide and 54 in all their engines. The 270 GMC could be bored to 292 woth a split manifold, cam, and three duces would run a hole lot better than the stock chev.

Clifford"s is still around? I know they always used to advertise slant 6 parts in the mopar mags.

Depending on your budget, there are a lot of things you can do.

Higher compression with new pistons. Port the head. Cam change. Port the intake. Get a header for the exhaust with a free flowing muffler.

If you have deeeeep pockets, you can put an intercooled turbocharger on it and drill the intake for port fuel injection. That would be the solution yielding the spunkiest engine and be the most drivable with the highest fuel economy to boot.

If you just want to surprise the guy next to you, a 100hp NOS kit would do nicely.

Just remember that modern cars will roast you with little effort no matter what you do. New V6 mustangs are both quicker AND faster in the 1/4 than 1968 428CJ mustangs were back in the day.

Thanks John_Bud!

Pistons, porting, cam update most likely the extent. Thinking of dual carb intake or one that would accept 4 bbl.

The turbo effort sounds cool :)
However I want it try to maintain most of the old school!!

10-4 pm the new cars compared to a 1950 GMC.

Here is a demonstration of a 292 chevy six. It is music to my ears. It can be found on youtube
#43068 or type in Hot Rod 292 six cyl. Let me know
what you think.

Have Fun

I am doing a rebuild of a 1968 C10 4x4 that is going back to original (close as I can). It was a 250 3 in the tree but its on the floor now with a lot of work. Like you said every body has a V8 loud pipes and now its time for a sleeper. And now for something completely different! Bandit
