SERIAL NUMBER

I was talking to a guy and he said that when a trailer company builds a trailer they put a I.D tag on them with the serial numbers and they also stamp in the trailer somewhere the serial number. I have looked all over on mine and cannot find it. If any one knows where it is please reply. Thank You.

No mine is not homemade, and it does have the tag on it but I was looking for where it is stamped in the trailer some where according to what I was told by someone. He didn't know where but he said that all trailers have it stamped somewhere else on the trailer.

my trailer came with both, and the stick-on info fades out to sun, but the serial number is stamped on the top frame rail of the goose just in case...is your a goose or bumper pull?...my b/p also has the same, tag faded but serial # is stamped close to trailer on left side v-rail

Mine has the I.D. tag and also has the V.I.N. "written" with welding rod on the inside of one of the main channel iron frame rails. You have to get under the trailer to see it.

Every trailer manufacturer is going to do it a little bit differently. It might help to know who made your trailer, then someone with the same brand might be able to give you a possible location.

I have a J-J-N goose neck that I bought used. It was built in Sikeston Mo. I got the Phone number off the trailer and tried to call them but all I got was a message that the phone was not in service. I called the dealer that sold it new and the phone number he gave me was the same. He no longer sells that brand and he didn't know where the number was stamped either.

looking at a different angle on this subject,,,does you registration have a Vin # on it...there has to be a number somewhere, if you get stopped by state patrol/local police/port/etc,,,they may impound it until you can prove it's yours, without knowing where numbers are...as for others, this might be something to think about, especially home made one without any stamped serial numbers...just my opinion

It has a tag on it but it is faded some. I was just wondering where the company that built it stamped it in the frame or can I stamp it my self or weld the numbers somewhere.

In Michigan there isn't a requirement for serial numbers on homemade trailers. I have two licensed and legal.

If you can get the VIN off the tag, or title, you should definitely stamp or weld the VIN somewhere on your trailer for future reference. Especially since you can't find it now.

It may not be stamped anywhere on the frame. I don't think there is a law requiring that the VIN be stamped or welded into the frame.

In fact I've looked, and none of my four trailers have the VIN anywhere but on a metal tag riveted to the frame.

most only have the number on the rivited tag, thats the best reason for either stamping it or welding it on the trailer frame, best place is on the tounge in plain site, think of it this way with all the metal scrapers around all one of them has to do is save a old tag of a junk trailer, then swipe your similer trailer, attach his tag, and its all his, no way to prove its not, permenent stamped or welded serial numbers prevent that

It doesn't prevent it, but it does make it more difficult.

After all, they could grind off the numbers and weld a patch over the spot. Of course at this point we're getting into "Oceans Eleven" style heists, over a simple trailer. Most thieves wouldn't be so sophisticated as to even pull the "replace the VIN tag" move. They'd just knock the old one off.

IMHO you should place the numbers somewhere only you would know. That proves positive identification of the trailer.

Thanks to all who replied. I will stamp it myself so that if the numbers on the tag get so that you cannot read them I will have a set of numbers on the trailer. Thanks again.

Louisiana requires ALL trailers to have a "VIN" STAMPED onto the frame. New mfg trailers come with. If out of state, DOT has a State Trooper stamp when tags are issued. Home built requires a State Trooper stamp VIN from registration papers.

I bought a trailer from Texas, older home built deckover. Registered in LAand a State Trooper stamped. Trailer was probably 20+ years old, but since VIN was stamped when I registered in LA it became a "new" trailer. This REQUIRED safety chains and break-a-way box because it was "built/stamped" after the Grandfather date for these item.

Not an issue, now it is completely legal!

They (5 states) told me it had to be stamped on the first cross beam while facing the rear of the trailer.

I've had a couple look for it but didn't make a fuss when they couldn't find it.

Im In Michigan Built a Tri Axle Gooseneck Dump Trailer. 1st thing is all trailers over 5200lbs must be titled and that takes a VIN#.I went to Secretery of State office to get the trailer plated. Was told they need a weight slip from a cert. scale and a safety inspection done by the police. Had the trailer weighed 6300 lbs. Called the Washtenaw county Sherriff. They done the the safety inspection signed of on the paper the Secretery of state office gave me. Took the paper work back to the Secretery of State They gave me a VIN # and a Tempery plate Now I am waiting on The State Police to come out a afix the Vin tag. And then back to the Secretery of State to get a real plate. Seems like a lot of B.S. for a trailer.
