Got my new NT winch installed. It's rated for 12,000lbs and it pulled my 4020 with loader onto the trailer with no problems. It has also has the wireless remote so I can stay outa the way.

Yep, I can take it off the trailer in seconds to keep out of the rain and sticky fingers is another reason we installed it that way. I also installed the 175 amp quick connects for electric.

I had a breakdown this summer on the 4020 in the middle of knowwhere and it sure would have been nice to load it up to work in the shop.

Do you happen to have a picture further out that shows where exactly you mounted it on the trailer?

Yours looks like it's mounted on the tongue, offset to the right.

I'm looking for ideas how to mount a winch on my trailer. Right smack in the middle would be great if not for the 12,000lb jack welded to the front of the trailer deck in the way.

does the truck supply the battery power or does a battery?? looking to see if i should make cables to my truck or not and what type of connections. picts would be nice.

(quoted from post at 08:20:29 11/01/11) That pin holding it looks a bit small...

That is a standard 2" receiver with a 5/8" cross pin, same as any trailer hitch on any truck.

That 5/8" pin is good for towing an 18,000lb trailer. If it can't hold up to the force from a 12,000lb winch, we should all just run and hide.

Sure do. It's not real clear but this is what I have.

Yeap, the welder said if I put a snatch block rated for 20k, I would need to drill holes for a extra pin about a foot back from the one that's in now..

The truck (Ford F-800) twin batterys already have a quick connect for the elec motor for the trailer ramps. I just unplug the trailer and plug in the winch. I leave the truck running when winching anything. I might try and get a better pic in a few days of the quick connects and the elec motor setup for the ramps.

That's why I got the wireless option for this winch, I can hide about 80+ft from the winch, like I did on this test run with the 4020/loader (roughly 12,000 lbs). :)

Thanks for the picture of your winch mount.

Looks like your jack is mounted differently from mine. Darn.

5/8 can be too small...depends on the grade of steel. Plus pulling an 18,000 lb trailer doesnt neccisarily put 18,000 lbs on the pin. A 12,000 # winch however will put 12,000# on the pin at full capacity which is a different loading than what that pin was originally designed. A 3/4" gr 5 pin would be better (considering some safety factors).

My trailer is a 10 ton Hudson. Maybe you or your welder can fab something that will work.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of adding another pin for a safety factor. The way it's set up now, we can move the winch to a truck with the same size hitch and pin.

I agree a 12000 lb winch can't shear a 5/8 pin. In
reality would have to shear it twice. I have a old
style 8000 Warn on a receiver hitch have had 2
blocks in the line and had it tied to a large tree.
It broke the chain a couple of times 3/8 in. Had to
get a rated chain. Vic

My Rockford book tells me that the sheer strength of 5/8 gr 5 is 67% of tensile strength, Which is120,000 lbs.

I have the same setup for my trailer. I'm running two 1/0 cables together and still couldn't get full power out of my winch until I put a battery on the trailer and let the truck charge the battery and help it under full load. It works great now.

Very nice setup! I need to do something like that with my winch. Right now it is just bolted to the trailer, I was going to make a sheet metal cover to protect it from the elements but never got it done! I probably should just redo it so that it can be easily mounted and dismounted. A wireless remote for the winch would be very handy too! My 12' control cord does not reach very far!

I wish I had a bigger shop to store my trailer out of the elements. Maybe, oneday. Sometimes, I leave the trailer on jobs sites and knew the winch would wonder off if I couldn't take it off easy. I like the wireless option so far.

That is the best thing I did for my winch. I can take it off and store in the shop. I can use it on the pickup, tractor or just chained to anything. I welded a battery holder on the front of the trailer and also have a 25ft set of jumper cables. The cables have come in handy for other things also. About a year ago I bought the wireless remote which is priceless when loading or unloading by yourself.

I have loaded some tremendous loads and have never experienced any problems with the pin in the receiver. I did have a problem unloading a newly painted car I am restoring. I forgot to put the pin in and it unloaded real fast and removed the posts off the battery. Not real funny at the time. No real damage to the car but just missed doing some real damage.
