trailer wiring 1997 gmc sierra

I was doing some rewiring to the livestock trailer and I ran into a problem with the wiring on the truck. At first when the lights on the trailer were turned on they were very dim and the reverse lights on the truck would come on. (the trailer has no reverse lights)I seperated the 4 pin connector and touched a wire to the ground pin and grounded the wire to the bumper and the reverse light turned off and the trailer lights lit up to normal brightness. I then went under the truck and cut the wire and reconnected it to the frame. That worked except the reverse lights don't work at all now. Even hooking it up the way it was before did nothing. So, does anyone know if there is a fuse for this reverse light that could have blown somehow and does and one know how this truck is wired? Thanks

Might be helpful, might not. Had same thing on my 97. Ground wire had rusted connection to frame. There are 2 fuse panels. One is at left end of dash, open door & pop off cover. Other is under hood on left inner fender. Don't remember now which one has B.U. fuse, too dark to go outside now. Might even be fuse in both places.

Sounds like the trailer may have been grounded through the back-up lights. Were the wires spliced or was one of those T connectors that plug into the harness used? If they were spliced it's quite possible.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the trailer was grounded through the back up lights. It was wired for the trailer quite a few years ago and somebody must have mistaken the little green wire for the ground. Replaced the fuse that had blown for whatever reason while I was playing with it trying to get it working and grounded it correctly and all works as it should.
