This past Friday I purchased a new 2011 F250 Super Duty with the 2.7 diesel engine. They say in the manual that I shouldn't pull a trailer or load it to capacity till I've driven it 500 miles. from the amount of power that it appears to have, seems like it will be a hoss & from the fuel mileage (18.6) on the dash just wondering what it'll be when pulling a gooseneck w/ tractors on it. Are there any dos or don'ts with this truck that I should be aware of? Previous truck was a 2000 F250 w/ V10 Thanks in advance, Keith

DO get the extended warranty. You can easily spend $15,000 on relatively minor repairs on a modern diesel engine.

DO make sure you have receipts and proof of regular scheduled maintenance. They check that stuff when you bring your truck in with $15,000 worth of fuel system damage, and will deny your claim if you can't prove the truck was properly maintained. I'm reading first-hand horror stories about this right now on an RV site and a Ford diesel site.

Your fuel economy will go up as you rack on the miles and the engine breaks in. Hand calculate your mileage; the computer lies. 10-11 is about what people are getting towing large 5th wheels.

Don't expect to get 18 mpg at all. 10 to 14 is much more realistic. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES ACCIDENTALLY PUT DEF FLUID IN THE FUEL TANK! If you do, don't start it. Have it towed in. I just went round and round with a landscaping co that someone put DEF in the fuel tank and it rusted the entire fuel system. They thought Ford should warranty their mistake. Their mistake voided the warranty on the entire fuel system.

I would recommend Ford Diesel Care for the engine Premium Care for anything Ford if you want extended coverage, or GMPP on a GM vehicle. My personal opinion is nearly all of the aftermarket service contracts (they are not a warranty) are a ripoff. If you want extended coverage that doesn't have fine print that basically says "Only covered on Tuesday while a black cat is crossing your path during a hail storm of golf balls", only buy coverage from the vehicle manufacturer.

Yes Sir,

They don't like wind.

On a still day you'll bump 22mpg and loaded you'll see 15-16. All ya gotta do is stay out of that turbo.

Yesterday, I had to haul my big tractor to town to have repairs done. After I kicked the duals off I got the tractor weight down to 14K pounds.

Truck didn't even know it was back there. Oh, and you're gonna love that engine brake. :>)

Thanks for the replies guys. We did get the extended warranty and so far really like the ride and performance, but I guess like everything else, time will tell LOL

Bought F350 dually with 6.7 loaded 12000lb pulling tractor on trailer truck didnt even know it had a load.

I know of 3 of the 6.7s in my area. All have in excess of 35,000 miles and none of them have been back in for repairs. Owners love them. All are averaging 15 to 18 MPG. One guy pulls 14,000 GVW lowboy and small excavator and swears he has never gotten less than 15 MPG.

I have the 2011 F250 Ford Gas Version I love mine. I can pull 14,000 and not even know it is back there. yes, the brake is awesome when in tow mode. it is like a jake brake.

I agree and would add to only buy a Chrysler service contract for your Chrysler. I have seen some aftermarket warranty companies weasel out of repairs hooking the customer for large repair bills. At dealership rates that can add up in a hurry.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid also called Urea or Adblue. It works with the Selective Reduction Catalyst to reduce oxides of nitrogen or NOX. Vehicles using DEF originally have programming that will limit them to idle only if the fluid is allowed to run out.

Yep, it's not just on Chrysler vehicles. The general manager of my dealership has a buddy with an 06 F350/6.0L. When the factory warranty ran out, he bought an aftermarket service contract on the engine. He was running a power programmer and eventually had leaking head gaskets. The aftermarket contract had a clause that only "oil lubricated parts" were covered...
