Hiring a Transporter And Scammers!!!

What are the norms when finding a transporter to haul machinery?

When they quote you a price and you both agree, and then he says that he needs $100 up front, that seems kind of fishy!

I don’t want to be scammed out of my money, and not have my load picked up, especially when time is a factor.

I have read that never pay for anything up front.

Who are the so called scammers that frequent the hauling schedule?

Here’s one:

I goggled the number 224-531-3002 and it turns out this guy is a scammer! He calls himself Shawn, and says that he hauls 7 days a week, 365 days a year. With all that hauling, it makes you wonder how he finds the time to call so often and quote you prices!

Beware of this Nut!!!!!!!!

I am glad that I did some research on this buy, before sending him any money on a haul that I need done.

Thanks For the replies!

For best results i would have someone that has everything needed like a U S DOT number insurance and the proper equipment for the job at hand. The ability to get the needed permits if needed and most of all the experience to haul what ever . Not some yaho with a pickup and goose neck that thinks he is a pro. Yea you will pay more but i do believe you will get a better bang for your buck. I bought my gooseneck and one ton for my own use to haul what i bought when i wanted it hauled . Yes i did haul a couple pieces for people and i Charged them what i felt was a fair price and at the time was a 1.50 a loaded mile . The ones i hauled for i knew them and considered them close friends. Had a lot of people stop by and asked about me hauling stuff for them and want to pay 50 bucks to go a couple hundred miles and got turned down fast , or we will pay your fuel , yea wright . when i needed something haule that was larger then my trailer would handle i would have it hauled by someone that had the equipment that was designed for that job haul it and pay them what they needed to do it . IF i bought a combine that needed a combine trailer and permits then that was the guy i needed and back then it was 2.50 a loaded mile plus permits then that is what i had to pay to get it moved . When it arrived at my location there was no damage to it i was happy the hauler was happy and it was delivered when he said it would be here. I would usually haul the grain head on my trailer and they would bring the corn head . Here are some companys that specialize in hauling that do this everyday . Cardinal trans, Combined, ATS, ICCI transport,Landstar,K G logistics, Mercer trucking ,Natco ,Transam transport,Turner trans port, Theses are just some of the few that have the step deck s and RGN's that can haul . BUT these company's do this for profit .

I have done some haulling in the past but my charges were a dinner or a hand shake. In all cases the people I hauled for were forced to listen to several storys and were forced to tell a couple of their own stories.
I still probly cheated them on the price.

I hauled a tractor from Montpelier to Edgerton a few years back for a guy. He ask what I would charge and I told him my fee and he said fine. I unloaded the tractor in his door yard and he shook my hand and thanked me. I started to tell him a story and he reached in his pocket and gave me a 20 dollar bill and said it was chore time. He must have already heard the story before.

The only people that get " scammed "
are greedy people looking to get a service or good for below cost ...

Those folks pay money up front - then complain when they get what they pay for ...

Notice how they never seem to include how
much they agreed to pay for the good or service?

Pay a fair price - get a fair deal

Period .....

Hello Andrew,

Most serious shippers who buy and sell equipment find a reliable freight shipping pro to handle their shipping then stick with them. These are guys who know rates and equipment nationwide and know a good deal from a bad deal at a glance. In trucking you may go through at least 20 or more bad ones to find one honest good one you can rely on. That's why once you find one you'll want to stick with them. Most problems happen when trying to get something for nothing. That doesn't mean you have to overpay to get a reliable carrier. There is always a magical number that gets your freight moved at a rate that makes your deal work and keep a carrier happy, too. Only way to learn those numbers is experience. Find you a guy with that experience you can trust then stick with him. Feel free to Google my name. I'm out of Palestine, Texas. If I can help you, please give me a call. Thanks and best of luck.

You are only half right with that assessment. You left out the part that the trucker that scams you ALSO agreed to the price. If the trucker agrees to a low ball price, it still does not give them the right to scam, cheat, or otherwise not provide the service at the exact rate that they agreed to.
Supply and demand have the right to work in BOTH directions, not just favor one party. When there is more demand to ship than trucks to move it, truckers have the right to increase their prices.
When there are more trucks (like today) than there are loads to move, the shipper inherits the leverage.
So you are saying that in "good" times when prices are higher, the shipper has the right to scam the trucker because the trucker charged more? I don't believe you thought that one all the way through.
