Could someone tell me what the high idle rpm is for this engine? It has 4.56 gears and it"s running about 3000 rpm at 60mph. Just wondering what the maximum rpm this engine could run for a long period of time (4 hr. trip). Thanks

My grandmother has an 84' Chevrolet 1/2 ton with the 6.2. It is gutless when pulling anything bigger than a lawn mower, but gets aobut 24 mpg. It used to get closer to 30 mpg before we turned up the pump after a rebuild.

I have thought about putting a 6.2 or 6.5 in my 1979 C20 with a TH400. I'm leaning torwards a 5.3 or 6.0 instead.

Good engine for MPG. Towing power... Mixed bag. There are turbo kits out there to make it have more power than smoke.

I don't have my book in front of me, but on my 6.5 the redline starts at 3,500 and tach goes to 5,000 rpm's. I'll say it like this, I've ran that truck 2,500 to 2,700 rpm for 500 miles, twice, only stopping for fuel. Didn't phase it. It's a V8. Even though it's a diesel, it still needs to wind up a little. May I ask why you're trying to drive a low geared truck 60 mph on such a trip?

Back before I had to park my 87 with the 6.2 because of frame rust I hauled my Ford 5000 diesel to Illinois with it from Nebraska. A little over 400 miles up and down lots of the Missouri hills on Hwy 136.

RPM was never a worry as long as I maintained legal speed coming down the hills. Going up the hills I would put her to the floor and let her bark thru the glasspack dual exhaust.

Wish that truck wasn't rusted out. It made up in MPH what it lacked in power. DOUG

Four hours might be pushing it. I was just curious about the top rpm. Thanks for the reply
