Transporting through Ontario

I have struck a deal on a tractor which is located near Detroit MI. I need to transport to Malone, NY and the most direct route would be the 401 through Ontario.

This is a used tractor value under 5,000 value. My question is will there be problens doing this at the Canadian border??

The plan as it sits is for the seller to meet me halfway and transfer to my trailer.

For all the extra distance, I would drive around at lot farther just avoid customs.
I had a customs agent insist on receiving the license, registration etc on a Deere tractor. No way to break even let alone win that debate.
Remember what happened to jdemaris even when he was in the right?
 
Just call them ( Canada or US Customs) tell them your plan and they will work with you and help you out. I do this often some stuff comes up to Canada and I bring things down to the US. I have never had troubles. The key to this is be PRO active get things done before hand. Have fun and enjoy.
 
No way would I do it. Not worth the hassle. I would drive an extra 500 miles before I might consider it worth the trouble. My bosses told me they went to a trade show in Syracuse, NY one time, They had to export everything from Canada, import it into the States, which had large amounts of paper work and arguing. American border officers saying the stupid Canadian border officers had forgotten forms and given the wrong forms, etc., and vice versa. Had to then export it from the States and import it into Canada on the way back.
 
I was traveling that area on occasion back in 1999 when they had the worst accident in Canadian history. They have since improved the highway with more lanes, better signage, and medians.
I think I would drive a long way out of my way to avoid customs. They sometimes make up the rules as they go, and you cannot win whether you are right, wrong, or confused.
 
We were supposed to be on the 401 between Chatham and Windsor at the time of the incident. We were delayed by some miracle and missed the mess.
Terrible wrecks in the fog and a 14yr old girl burned to death trapped in a car. I keep a hacksaw and extra blades in each vehicle now. Fire extinguishers too.
At that time, east and west bound lane shoulders were divided only by 15-20ft of flat ground.
 
You're talking a differenc of about 100 miles, maybe, from Detroit. I think I'd stay south.
 
If it's only 100 miles farther to not go through Canada and deal with Customs on either side, that's what, 2 hrs more drive time? How many hours can they hold you up if they decide you're up to no good, have wrong papers, etc? At 10 miles to the gallon and $4 per gallon, that's only $40 bucks. Is that worth it?
 
You will compound any difficulty by transferring it midway.
Go around. I just drove from Detroit to Watertown and it is no big deal. But I saw a solid unmoving line of traffic on the bridge going into Canada from the U.S. when I drove by.
 
Upon consideration I think I may just go around. I hadn't really thought about the delay at the border...

Frankly I would rather be driving than waiting in line.

jde maris made the mistake of being right while the Canada Customs agent being wrong. So the agent decided to make an example of jdemaris.
