My brakes on my gooseneck trailer aren't working as they should. When new(2006) I would set the max voltage (loaded) to about 8 volts and have good braking performance. Now, I'm at 13 volts (at the Teknoshia Prodigy readout) and don't have much braking from the trailer. Voltage at the controller output and truck plug is 11.75 V, and 9.75 V at the brake magnet. Yeah, I know I'm loosing 2 volts, but that's thru a 50' wire. Grounds are good, less than 1 ohm from the trailer frame and truck frame. I inspected/lubed actuating arms, sanded the shoes, and adjusted the brakes so they had a slight drag when spinning the wheel while jacked up. All brakes work while jacked up. Magnets have some wear, but still look ok.
Is the best solution just to replace the assemblies? That's cheaper than buying piece parts. Any advantage between Hayes or Dexter assemblies?
I'm open to ideas. Mike
