F250 and a JD 4020

Looking at buying a 2000 F250 4x4 crewcab with a V10 and auto trans for farm chores. Will this truck handle my 1966 JD 4020? I assume its weight is around 10000 lbs. It has a loader and 1000 lbs of weight on the rear wheels. Plan on buying a 20' or so gooseneck deckover to move it. I will only be hauling this tractor 30 miles at a time, at most 4 times a year, in central NC which is foot hill terrain.

That combo will do it with style. My tow rig is a 2001 Silverado 1500 4x4, 5.3L, auto, 3.73 gear, B&W gooseneck hitch. My last tractor purchase was an Allis Chalmers 180. 8,000 lbs, moderate hills, 360 miles one-way, 2 states. I keep it out of OD and can maintain 65 mph unless the hills are long. The V-10 should walk the dog.

Good luck with the truck.

Thanks for the replys. I look forward to being able to move it to differant places and use it. Thanks

I went from diesel to a V10 and havent regretted it. Not as bad on gas as all the rumors if you drive it sensibly. Just hauled a new McCormick 105 hp tractor from MN to TN with mine. 9.2 for the heavily loaded miles.....ended up with 9.9 for the whole round.

Thats great to hear. I really like the gas engine. No more heavy pulling than I plan on doing, I think the diesel engine option would be money wasted. If you look back at the late 80's and early 90's f250, the gas and diesels are real close to the same price now. I only know of one guy that uses his diesel 250 like I would think it is suppose to; everyday, to and from jobs, with a 20' trailer in tow. He never unhooks the trailer. It seems like most the rest just like to ride and listen to the turbo, and talk down the v10 because it gets 3 or 4 MPG less unloaded.

I recently towed a Ford 5000 with a FEL and chlorided tires with a Ford F250 4x4. I figured it weighed close to 10,000 pounds. The Ford was an 8 banger and it handled the load but it was a little touch and go. I didn"t feel comfortable with that much weigh following me so closely but the truck was able to handle the job.

I'm not sure I'd try it, but the boss hauls the 4450 with loader on the gooseneck with the 96 2500 Cummins.
