10,000# dexter axle problems

Hey Guys:

Have any of you heard of a recall for the 10,000# dual tandem dexter axles for a problem with the brake shoe? This is on my near new pro trak trailer and I was told that some of dexters brake shoes were defective and they replaced all the brakes under warranty. It seems odd that the two causing trouble again were the ones that were fixed. I have pulled trailer 150-200 miles. It feels as if the brakes are dragging. You can unhook power cord to truck and jack trailer up, wheels turn with some resistance for a few turns, then they lock up, to free them you have to roll the wheel backwards. Ive never seen anything like it and it appears to have come back again even after new brakes, whats going on?

Well a highly edgjamacated guess the lining has came loose from the backing. I just fixed mine, bought it with a new brake job but the guy died shortly after. Trailer sat for 3yr and I bought it. Started acting like yours, plenty of lining just not bonded to the shoe! There are no rivets anymore just super glue.

They replaced some axles under warranty because the brakes wouldn"t work right.Mine always dragged since new.If you backed up then went foreward they were fine, but when you applied the brakes they would drag again. They went to a later back plate that took a different axle. The early 9000 pound axles had the same problem.

It sure sounds like this, this is a April of 2010 trailer. Had brakes replaced and its still doing it, to get it to loosen up you have to back wheel up. I bought this thing new in July, put about 800 miles on it (maximum) and its already been down for repair for about 4 weeks. I talked to the manufacturer and they told me they got ahold of their dexter representative and the s*b has not called me yet. Looks like I'm going to have to call them myself. Thats the whole reason I bought this trailer was because of the quality of dexter axles and ease of getting parts. If I knew this was going to happen I would have bought an econoline or sure-trac and got the other brand of axle.

What year did they go to the new axle to fix this brake problem?

My '06 trailer has one brake doing the same thing. I took everything apart and couldn't find a problem. Made me so mad I just use it the way it is. That drum runs a bit hot- guess I'll replace everything when it wears out, which shouldn't take too long.

There is a definite problem, I'm going to call dexter today. No need in running one as hot as mine gets, I'd eventually think the seal or bearing would fail after awhile.toolz, did this just start or has this happened since new?

I bought my trailer used, pulled all the hubs, lubed and adjusted everything, and replaces one set of shoes (not the problem set). This problem just started this spring, had no problem last year. Please let us know what you find out. Thanks--

I will, dexter seems to be working with me...not too sure about pro-trak. But then again whats it matter, the only thing important to a trailer is the running gear. The only way they may tell if its defective is give them the date stamped on the brake shoes to see if they are the good or bad ones.

my left front tire will lock up first. bought one of those hensley true controller and it showed one wheel was not working and just replaced all the drumms and magnets due to magnet wearing out drum. hensley said the wireing needs to be the same length and not daisey chain to make the brakes work right. my trailer is a 07 48' pro trac. dual 10,000 lb dexter axles. havent replace the brake wireing yet.
