Thinking about buying this trailer (picts)

This trailer is owned by a friend of mine that I work for. He said that he is looking to get about $500 for it. When he bought it the trailer was homemade. He put stronger axles on it and they have brakes that will need to be set up. It will need to be rewired and new lights. The trailer was originaly a car trailer and then he welded sides to it. I was thinking about buying it to haul tractors and other things to shows. I would have to cut the sides off though. It is 18 foot by about 80 inches. Tractors like John Deere A or one of my B's or the Farmall C. What do you think??? Thanks for your input from Nebraska, Andrew.

Mabey the 'C'. Definitely not the 'A'...
Price sounds kinda fair for the trailer for what it is but I don't think I'd want to haul any even moderately heavy tractors on it. I think you'd be better off to find something heavier.

The good: It is a nice size trailer. Appears to have a little bit of a dovetail, makes it easier to load. Has some type of common wheel rather than a mobile home rim.

The bad: The axles are a little farther back than I like to see them, it will get nose heavy if not loaded right.

The ugly: No break away box I can see. Safety chains are too light. Will need to completely wire the lights and brakes. Not totally sure about the hitch, can't quite decide what it is I don't like, but something spooks me. You will also need to build fenders for it. By the time it is done right, you will have another 250 to 500 in it, depending on how cheap you can buy parts and labor.

Am I going to tell you NOT to buy it? No, but if you would decide to pull across a state line, DOT will get real picky if they choose to. Talking from experience of this happening to me.

Check prices on a new one up to specs first, and go from there. This trailer is likely best left the way it is set up for someone who needs a brush and trash hauler. Just my opinion. DOUG

Doug pretty well covered my thoughts on the pros and cons for condition. For size and weight capacity, I can't speak to the green tractors, but my Super C and A both fit nicely throough the 82" between the fenders on my car hauler, though I do have the wheels tucked in close on the Super C.

my opinion, cant buy much of a trailer for $500,I would buy it and use it till you could upgrade, just take in what the other said below also, my 2 cents

You can't go wrong at that price; but personally I prefer a gooseneck when hauling over 5000lbs. They seem to stay behind the truck better and that is where it should be!

You asked this on some other forum too...

The problem with this trailer is that it's got a 7000lb frame and 14000lb axles.

You can't load it up to 14000lbs and hit the road with it. The axles will take the load but the frame won't. Just putting heavier axles on a trailer does not increase its capacity.

It is a good value for what it is, a 7000lb trailer. However, don't plan on hauling anything much over 4000lbs with it.
