What Axles are these?

These axles are on a trailer I might look at and I was wondering if they are still serviceable parts wise? They have brakes and the seller said they were old Dexter axles from a camper trailer. They are 3500lb and are under a 20 foot flatdeck trailer now. I have never seen the 4 lug? style of these. Should they be avoided?

How do torsion axles work?

Thanks

That picture of the bottom looks like it is still a camper frame. Those axles are ok if you can control the brakes. If your hitch is too high or low the brakes will slide the tires on one axle when the trailer is empty. Springs with an equalizer between the axles is better for the brakes. Or just keep the brakes turned off when empty with these axles.

Those are Dexter Star pattern. I have two trailers with them. One has 14" wheels the other 15". Most have 10" brakes And are 3500 lb. and they work fine. but you need springs on that trailer with Rockers in middle. to balance the weight on the axles.

The equalizers and springs are necessary as previously stated. They are not difficult to install. 3500 pound Dexter axles are available from Tractor supply without brakes. They should have brake flanges, but if they don't you can weld some on. You can transfer the brake drum and brake assembly from the torsion axles to the new spring axles.

There are already torsion axles on that trailer. Why convert to springs and equalizers if the torflex springs are in good shape?

My utility trailer has tandem torflex axles and it rides like a cloud.

The are camper axles, but I don"t think their 7000 pounders. If you do a Google search there is a site that tells what diameter the axle needs to be for a certain weight. I build a trailer out of a camper with the same style wheels. I boxed in the four inch channel on the main frame and then added three inch channel every three feet across the frame. I"ve hauled three ton of hay with no problems.
