Like to know what kind of service you have had if you owned one.
The one I"m looking at has 121,000 mi,and looks in good shape, uses a little bit of oil,but guess with the 454,thats expected.
Thanks

I've got that engine in a 2001 3500 dually. Bought it brand new. Always did use some oil. By the way, the 8.1 is NOT a 454, it IS a 496.

Mister T your right,it is a 496.
What kind of mileage do you get? Are you happy with the engine?
This truck has 121,000,I dont consider this high miles for this engine

I have one, its an 01 with a little over 120K on it. I like it. Mine is 6 speed manual in a 2500 crew cab shortbed. Not much to say, its just a big huge gas engine. I get like 10-11 mpg driving around the neighborhood, I think my all time high on interstate was 13.6 it needs a quart of oil half way through the oil change period, never smokes, they just gradually burn it off. Just the way they are. I use it for everything, on the farm some, towing trailer, going to the store. it works for me and at this point I don't really desire the upkeep or price on a diesel

Hello cd1,
Do you use 10W30 in the engine?
Sounds like you have got along fine with yours.I"m going to do what you are, drive it for everything. And I"m with you on the simplicity of owning a gas verus diesel.Just will work better for me also.I"m going to sell a older pickup I have also, just have this one for the farm trips, and hauling the old equipment. Thanks for your input, your answer is what I was looking for

Yep, you pretty much described mine to a tee, right down to the miles per gallon and the oil consumption. When my truck was new, I complained to the dealer about the oil consumption. He informed me that the 8.1 engines were designed to use a little oil. That way, the engineers knew the engine would not be starved for lubrication when it is working hard.

I use 10w-30 full synthetic in mine. Don't really know it that is an improvement or not, but it did seem to help a little with the miles per gallon.

MisterT,

gm published a service bulletin on that engine
in 2002 for oil consumption.
the repair at that time was to replace the intake manifold bolts, then in 2005
a new bulletin was published to replace the intake gaskets with a improved design if the bolt replacement didn t correct the oil consumption concern.
i have replace the bolts on 2 or 3 of these engines and that did take care of the problem.

good to know, if i ever get extremely bored maybe I will look into that. I imagine if your going to the hassle there is no excuse not to do an intake gasket?

Thank you for that info. I'll check with my dealer and see what is recommended for the bolts.

Howeduin, yes,as Mister T said thanks for the information,I"m going to check into this.Wonder if there is a website that would shed further light on this service bulletin,or was it fix on failure

first bulletin for bolt replacement is
02-06-01-035, have your dealer print you a copy
as it has the part number for the bolts and
proper torque sequence.

the second bulletin number is PIP3193B
that states the intake gasket was updated in
2004 and can be used in the prior years
hope this helps

Thanks for the great information,I assume this isnt something they would do under a warranty policy

What upkeep on a diesel? Fuel, oil and air filter. What else is there? Spark plugs and wires?

8.1 is a gas engine --> not a diesel.

Maintenance on the 8.1 (or any gas engine) is air filters, oil + filter, trans fluid, diff fluid, plugs, etc.

Should also lube the suspension every time there is an oil change. I think there are 11 or 13 points to grease.

Chevy's (and many others) are also prone to the brake caliper pad area rusting and the pad sticking. That will chew up the rotor FAST and kill the mpg's. When you rotate the tires, you should put a dab of SYNTHETIC caliber lube on the pads so they will slide smoothly. This is especially important in the rust belt or any salty area.

things break, turbo, injectors, injection pump, glow plugs, lots of crap i dont need to deal with

John,
Thanks for the good information,I want this truck to last a long time.

I have an '04 3500 SRW with the 8.1L & Allison! Great truck! I use it for everything from running around to hauling my tractors. I have a total average of 10.5 MPG over the life of the truck!

Here's a picture of truck and trailer

Gee,thats great mileage for all around Shetland, this 01 I bought, has the same engine and of course the Allison, and if I could get that and enjoy the benefits of owning her.She is replacing a 1994 F150,that I know didnt get any better then 10 miles to the gallon. Thanks for the post

Big Block Chev tend to use some oil. but I have known some to go over 375,000 miles without a major problem. A few Fuel pumps .

I have heard nothing but good info from the 8.1L. My next truck will either be the new 6.2L in a 1/2 ton or an 8.1L in a 3/4 ton (either will be a GMC). I used to want a diesel, but I hear nothing but horror stories when they break down. Average shop repair can run $4000+. Not much can break and result in a $4000 repair bill on a gasser.

I saw one almost bought for a farm truck last month. 2004 or 2005 LWB (long bed, reg cab) 2wd 8.1L - Allison, unknown miles, $6400.

You gotta know they're a good engine, they don't make em any more!

The one you saw sounds zactly like mine, 'cept mine's 4x4! (see earlier picture in this topic).

Hi Jason,
Yes,I stand corrected, someone else let me know that, just made me happier! Sounds like a great engine
