Another brake controller question

Can a brake controller go bad on one circuit? I have a Tekonsha Prodigy that is about 10 yrs old and it is not working with the brake pedal but will work when used manually. Recently burned the hotwire from power source to the controller into and replaced it but the controller has not worked right since. This is on a '97 Ford 3/4 ton. And also if the brakes are not working with the pedal would the trailer brake lights also not work. Thanks in advance for any and all replies. Tom

To answer your first question, yes,the circuit board could be bad, but it could also be a fuse. The brake control gets its signal from the brake light circuit on the truck. No brake lights, no control voltage to the controller. When you work it manually you bypass the control circuit. Also on a 97 F250 you have seperate fuses for the truck and trailer. You can have lights on the truck and not on the trailer or visa versa if you have blown fuses. The trailer fuses are under the hood in the big box. Hope this helps.

welding man, thanks for the reply. When I was backing the trailer into it's parking spot while ago it was dark enough that I could see the brake lights and they are working on the truck and trailer. When I wired this up I used an inline breaker, could I have melted this breaker inside? When it gets light again I will start checking fuses and replace that breaker. Thanks again. Tom

If the brake controller works with the manual lever, then it's not the breaker. The controler would not work at all if the breaker were bad.

The problem is the wire from the brake light switch under the dashboard.

Your controller gets the signal to start applying brakes from the same switch that causes your brake lights to come on. It's attached to the brake pedal under the dash.

There is a possibility that that circuit somehow got burned out in the controller itself, but more likely, it's just a loose wire or bad splice.
