It botheers me to no end when I see a add for a trailer for sale and the seller lists it as dual axle. I believe usually they mean tandem axles. In my book tandem refers to axles and the word dual refers to wheels, ie 2 tires and wheels for each brake drum or brake rotor.

As I see it.. if someone tells me it's a dual axle. Then dual is TWO. ..Now if they say dual wheels. Then I know it has two wheels on each side... Tandem .. is dual axles.
Just my thoughts on matter. *S

When 2 horses are hitched up with one in front of the other to pull a carriage or wagon they are said to be hooked up,or hitched in TANDEM, as compared to the other way with the 2 horses side by side. This is why when you have 2 axles on a trailer or 2 rear axles on a truck it is correctly called a tandem, regardless of weather the axles are equipped with single or dual wheels at the ends of each axle.
