The Swiftless ones that I have seen, Just turn the tractor around the corner like you would a car and let the trailer foot for itself.

I had a driver wedge our 6 yard dumpster under a van trailer a few months ago. He drives for someone else now.

Friend had a first day new dirt dummy pull out of the job site with the dump body up. He took down SIX utility poles before he ran out of gears to shift down to.

The only reason Swift has a bad reputation is because they have by far the most trucks on the road. Law of averages; more trucks, more incidents.

I'm betting that their actual safety record is no worse than any other common carrier. There are f-ups behind the wheel at any trucking company with more than a few drivers.

We had a mechanic go out of our main shop yard with a digger/derrick. He forgot to store the derrick. Middle of a fairly large city. Needless to say he collected several utility lines before he caught one that lifted the front end off the ground. {This was not the only complete disaster he committed over the years.)

I dunno, I'll defer to Jon's judgement !!!!! (oops I didn't realize it was this old)

As for bad drivers, it's a toss-up between Werner and Swift. Both are training companies, and both put drivers out solo long before they are ready for solo. That is the real reason for the bad reputation. Also note that both of them are probably self-insured for the most part. If they weren't. they couldn't afford the premiums.
Most training companies self insure. I worked for a training company when I first started driving. They were self insured. I was told that they could not otherwise afford to be a training company.

The one biggest problem in the trucking industry is that when older drivers retire, there are less and less younger drivers to replace them. That is one of the biggest reasons that they push "green" drivers out solo before they are really ready. Back in the old days, there was no way to get a job without experience, and no way to get experience. I might also add that it doesn't help that there are DOT cops around every corner just itching to write drivers tickets. Then there were things like that CSA-2010. The feds are micro-managing drivers to the point that the stress levels are getting too high for most.
