JUst a little bit of information on the CDL. You will have to go to an approved school to take the test, Welcome to 2022

Only if your going after a new one. Us old fols that have them don't have to worry about that

I haven't had a physical in years but still have my CDL. I don't drive a big rig at this time but I will keep the CDL just in case I get the chance to fix my 1963 Diamond-T and put it back on the road

If you own your own truck and drive for your self yes you can at least in this state as in not for hire farm type use

Funny you mention that. I'm just starting class for my CDL. After talking with the instructor, it doesn't seem like a big deal. Won't apply to me as I'll have my permit by then, but seems like a way to get the fly by night operations cleaned up.

I guess I'm gonna have to get hold of my friend that lives in Mexico, MO. and have check the laws. Maybe even send me a copy!!!
Jim has been living there since 1967, after he got out of the Navy.

Here in N.H. the CDL privileges are suspended a few days after the medical card expires. To renew a license the state has to have a copy of your DOT physical on file.It is automaticly restored when the state receives proof of the physical,up to two years. If you don't get one on file in that time the CDL is gone, and you have to take the whole test to get it back.We do have the exception for anybody that works for a municipality, the state, fire dept.etc.When you go to renew your CDL if you don't have a current DOT card on file you just have to check that box saying you will only drive under those conditions.A friend that works for the state just got caught driving his dump truck with no medical card.He explained that he worked for the state and was exempt. He was told no,not in your own truck. You need to be driving that municipal vehicle to be exempt. They were nice, and just told him not to do it anymore.

(quoted from post at 14:15:37 12/30/21) Only Non-excepted CDL holders need a medical card.
Excepted CDL holders do not need a medical card.
am one of those Excepted CDL holders and can only drive in my home state of Missouri. After a 47 year career and 4 and a half million miles on this butt I don't want to go anywhere anymore. I now pull an end dump for a neighbor 3 or 4 days a week.

Keith, yes I am exempted because all I drive is fire trucks here in Chester NH. I drove tri-axle dump part time for ten years, and after I had my defibrillator installed the guy that I had been driving for was pretty bummed out that I couldn't drive for him anymore. I told him that I could drive for him if he filed for non-profit status but he didn't want to do that, LOL.

BD Cowboy, do you need a CDL for your show truck? I thought you might be exempted if you were bob tailed. I looked today, I am due for my next physical in March. The sad thing is most of us grew up driving tractors, and pulling equipment that we would never let our grandkids on till they were at least ten years older than we were. That is how we learned to drive trucks, by backing farm wagons with a hand clutch JD cultivating beans and corn 4 rows at a time, without taking out the crops. Now we have a government(state, fed.local)telling us we aren't smart to decide if some 25 year old can parallel park a semi.

ince the Emeryville is registered as an antique vehicle is is non-commercial. Several years ago I was stopped on I-55 on the way home from a show and since I was pulling my trailer the DOT officer asked if the pickup and side by side was mine. After looking at the truck and my CDL he let me go on my merry way. Have crossed many scales with it and have never been bothered. An officer at the Bloomsdale, Mo scales told me that I should cross the scales as he couldn't tell how I was plated from out on the road. You saw it at Sedalia several yrs ago

While I have not checked the law in a long time but back when I first got my 1963 Diamond-T as long as I used it for farm stuff I did not need to have a CDL but I got one any how just to make sure

Yep, here in Ohio theres 4 classifications to choose from to self certify. Can change them at any time, just have to get dot physical and send card into the state to put on file. I was also told by an Ohio dot man, you didnt need a Cdl for a semi truck if it was for personal use, Im guessing an old truck just driving to shows. You may even be able to put historical plates on a old semi truck, not for sure on that

I've seen more then one big rig with historical plate on it here in MO. But having them limits what you can do and how much you can drive

Sounds a lot stricter here in Ontario..

if your vehicle or combination has a GVW of more than 10000 pounds, you need a class D licence....so technically, to drive a heavy duty dually pickup...even empty....you need to upgrade from a G licence.

In Washington, if you don't have a current physical form, you can't renew your CDL. And the State Patrol, or DOT will check it at every opportunity.

SkipperII, and I'll bet that if you were to ask at your registry they would hand you a form equivalent to the one that Keith True mentioned, that gives you the option to drive in-state only non- commerce only with no medical card just as I do here in NH.

I'm curious What defines Non-excepted CDL holders from Excepted CDL Holders when it comes to medical card?
I think you're only putting out half the information.

Thanks Keith

Glad I read this post got to look at my own CDL physical card expires the end of this month better get it renewed.

Keith, John is putting out way less than half, LOl. but maybe he is not very fast on the key board and doesn't want to spend hours typing. Here in NH when you go for a CDL renewal the first thing you do before approaching the screening counter is fill out a form that gives you about 8 questions to answer in order to determine whether you want exempt or non-exempt.

Looks like Missouri has pretty much the same wording as other states on the medical side, and I expect the same for most CDL info as they have to meet Federal regs. Whether one follows them properly, or not, is another story.

How does that old saying go? Ignorance of the law means that it does not apply to you?

I am still able to keep my CDL but yet not have to have a DOT physical because I keep it so if I have to drive I can

(quoted from post at 15:44:15 01/05/22) Sounds like there are no laws in Missouri. At least that pertain to certain people.

what you are trying to say is "Someone got caught with their hand in the cookie chair".

Keith

That is the way it is in NYS. And truthfully I thought it was the same in every state. In NY it's up to the municipality if they require the CDL or not. We have drivers that retired from state and local municipal driving jobs and then started as vehicle transport. They had CDL'S but couldn't cross state lines until they got physicals.

until you get in an accident in your car or pickup and some wise a$$ attorney finds out you have a CDL and tells you that you are a professional driver and therefore should know better and nails your a&& to the cross
