Hello

I have oregon farm plate on my chevy 2500 pickup and will be taking a trailer from oregon to iowa for a farm event passing thru wa idaho montana minnesota, south dakota and iowa. Do I have to get trip permits for a pickup and trailer? If so, Is there an easy way to do this as it seems a hassle to do it with each state. I am hauing some horse drawn farm equipment for my own personal farm use to and from the event.

You may want to check with your Motor vehicle Dept and insurance company. Most farm tags are limited to a 150-200 mile radius from your base address.

Google "truck trip permits" and choose a company, there are many. For a Muti-state trip as you are planning they can keep you out of trouble.

Federal standards limit farm plates to 150 miles radius of origin. See folks stretching that quite frequently, but, finding a cop in a bad mood could get expensive.

Might be simplest to change your registration of your truck and trailer to match your new usage.

I looked up Oregon farm plates. You can just haul farm commodities. Can't haul farm machinery even at home.

I was in texas a few years ago. texas says I need two plates. mo just has one on a 3/4 ton. they fellow I was talking to said all states are different but they honor that state so I would check your laws in your state. mo law also states you need plates with a weight on it that has to cover the total weight of the truck, trailer and what ever your hauling. this is for personal use. not for custom hauling which fits in another category.

Federal laws may say that you are limited to 150 miles but you would have to show me where you found that. I don?t think you can. I have Nebraska farm plates and have been from West Virginia was o Idaho. South Dakota to Texas, pulling a trailer and never have bought any kind of permit. I do drive a truck for a living so I have just a bit of knowledge about all that. Unless I have livestock on, I refuse to stop at a scale with the pickup. Empty they can run me down if they want to. Never happened in 35 years yet.
Just drive like you normally do and be polite if you get stopped. Wyoming is extremely good about explaining what you need. I avoid the scales between Rapid City and Sturgis. Doesn?t matter if I have an empty pickup or a loaded semi, seems like I always have trouble there.

You haven,t been to some of the western states the stop everybody upon entering the state has to stop.

Other then Washington Oregon and California I have been to all the rest, with a trailer. I don?t stop especially empty.
