6.4 powerstroke

Are these engines as prone to failure as reading on the internet indicates, or, are they decent engines if properly maintained. I have no desire to put a programmer on one but will often be around 30000lbs gvw. What are the experience of some that have owned these.
 
I have a 2008 6.4 crewcab 4x4 dually, knock on wood, it?s never had anything but normal maintenance, can?t say a lot
For the mileage, 14-16 empty, 9-12 with the gooseneck on. Plenty of power, quieter than my 95 7.3 that I also have.
I think more of the problems with them all are people who hop them up with tuners and such, don?t maintain them, and such.
There?s horror stories about them all, even the newest 6.7, but my neighbor has almost 300,000 on his with no problems.
 
I have a friend who said the same thing. It went just over 120000, took off the egr. And the oil cooler etc. He still bragged on it $4000 later. Then another $2500 for injectors. Still bragging a little. Then it started missing just sometimes. Did I mention it left him beside the road at least twice and was towed. Traded it for a 6.7 Ford no problems with it. My advice buy a gas or move up to a 2010.
 
I help a friend keep 7- 2008 F250s running. The 6.4 motor is a complicated motor. The first thing I would do is dump the particulant filter and have some one flash/program the ECM so it does not try to clean the filter anymore and quits running the ERG too.

The ones we have done this on are lasting much better and are getting better fuel mileage.18-19 empty and 12-14 loaded. We did not turn the fuel up at high RPM. Just sooner at low RPMs to wake the turbos up faster to build boost pressure for better fuel consumption. Local fellow is replacing the entire exhaust with a full exhaust/muffler kit. HE has a fellow program it. Total cost parts and labor is Right around $900.

If you can't( local inspections) or do not want to delete the EGR and filter burn out. Then do not plan on running these motors much over 150K. They get really expensive when they over heat running hot trying to clean a bad particulant filter. Cracked heads being the most common failure. Finding rebuild heads is just about impossible too as finding good rebuildable cores is very hard. Turbo failure too. It is real easy to spend thousands of dollars real quick on these motors.

The real late 6.0 motors are better then the 6.4s. The 6.7 is really complicated. Turbos failing at around 100K are fairly common. Parts and labor for that can easily be in the $5-7K range.

The whole Power stroke motor line can be expensive to repair. 7.3can cost $2500+ when the injectors fail.
 
As far as I'm concerned a 6.0 is better than a 6.4 because once you fix a 6.0 they are a good engine. The 6.4 is not good and as far as I know there is no way to make them good. I'm a Ford guy all the way, but the 6.4 is a lemon. An older 7.3 or newer 6.7 are both great motors and as said the 6.0 can be made good. The v-10 and the newer 6.2 gas are also good motors and the new 6.2 gets petty decent milage.
 
My cousin has sunk about 8000$ into his and he hasn?t drove it 50 miles since he bought it to replace an 06 dodge Cummins that had 3 dead cylinders from broken piston rings which is common on them04 until 07 then in 08. They were trying to pass emissions without using egr. I think he?s wishing now he?d have rebuilt the Cummins
 
If the belt breaks on a 6.7, it can break a mounting tab on the timing cover, which can't be replaced til the pan is off, which can't be removed with the trans in place.

The best way to get long life out of the 6.0 and 6.4 would probably be to turn them down to the output of the 7.3 they were designed to replace.
 
Being a Powerstroke specialist at a Ford dealer I can say they are garbage. The only way I'd consider one is if it's a fresh complete engine and had a full emissions delete done to it. To regen the particulate filter they pulse the fuel injectors in the exhaust stroke. This puts fuel in the oil and that's normal operation. By eliminating that the engine mechanically has a chance to live. The next problem is the injection pumps will self destruct and in the process contaminate the entire high pressure fuel system if the owner doesn't keep up with fuel filters. I'll keep my 6.0 until it's too rusty to run anymore.
 
Not many on here own a 6.4, only know of someone else that does and its second hand knowledge. I have owned a 2008 6.4 F350 SRW for 5 years and it has over 220,000 miles on it. I pull a goose neck trailer weekly. Only repairs I've had to do is replace the radiator. I only run synthetic oil in engine and trans. Have it deleted and egr turned off. I have it tuned and get 20+ mpg on highway and 10-12 pulling trailer. I think the 6.4 is as good as any other diesel. It has to be deleted and maintained.
