Goose neck plate

Ive got a 2004 GMC 3/4 ton truck. Ive been looking at hitches i love the b&w hitch that every one uses. I just can't afford to spend the money on the hitch. Ive a buddy that is wheeling to sell me a gooseneck plate. How is the best way to install the plate

Thanks

I would bolt it with a spacer plate to the frame. The spacer plate under the box to hold the weight, and make the top plate tight to the frame, without squashing things when you tighten up the bolts.

The steel in the bed of a 2004 is not strong enough for a gooseneck plate. Please, do it right or don't do it at all. Go with the B&W.

If you have time, watch CL,I see B&W for $200.00 and less. Yes I see them for $800.00 too.

$800 for a B&W hitch? Has the price gone up that much in 15 years? Don't remember now what I paid for mine, but it was nowhere close to $800.

What ever you do, wont drill through the top flange of the frame. Bolt through the side of the truck frame and run legs up to the plate. Gm trucks are harder to make mounts for because the frames are not parallel, but are wider in front tapering to the rear. So it will be easier to install a factory hitch, or one already made.

I stopped at the Pawn shop tonight to kill a little time, B&W ball hitch looked new, $100.00

The BIG reason I went with the B&W instead of building my own is liability. If a homemade hitch fails, and injuries are sustained, It would be 100% my responsibility.

If the B&W hitch, properly installed, and being used within its limits fails and causes injuries, At least I would not FEEL that it was all my fault.

I have bolted the plates sold from TSC into older trucks and they worked fine. I think I still have one slightly used around here somewhere. I'm in Ohio if interested.
That being said having a gooseneck hitch that the ball can easily pop out of the way is worth the extra money !
