SVCummins & Walter - Question for you

SVCummins, you said in Walters post....

It?s a 1998 3500 it?s build date is 3 of 98 but it?s a 24 valve cummins it?s has plus 50 hp injectors and an edge with attitude 5 stage programmer the flat bed is home made is 8 feet long and and 8 feet wide it has a tool box and a diesel compressor on it . My 94 3500 weighed 8500 with the same tool box and air compressor it would pull 650 miles gallons out of 33 gallon of fuel everytime . I just got home from hauling a 17,000 pound load 230 miles and averaged 13.55 mpg I was running 80 mph the whole way

So i have a 2000 F650 crew cab, 24v, stock, 11r22.5's 7 spd, air brakes, base line 225hp. But tips the scales at about 16,000 lbs. when its unloaded it runs great, put the trailer on it or the other day, i hauled 2, 6 row combine heads and it wouldnt hardly get out of its own way...gut-LESS....

So the guys over at DAP recommended 75 HP VCO type injectors and maybe a quadzilla tuner. I need to put a pyro on, i guess my question is what do you guys think of that recommendation? What little i know about the 5.9's doesnt help, but i read most people go with a SAC style instead of the VCO. just trying to get as many opinions as i can before i pull the trigger on anything....

Injectors on these without a tuner won?t gain you a whole lot .
I?m not sure what injectors this truck has as they and the
programmer was in It when I bought the truck. with my edge
tuner it has a display that shows trans temp ,manifold psi , egt
and fuel psi it also lets me set the max exhaust temp which I
set at 1250 it almost never goes that high .

I thought i would do both injectors and tuner, that way i could increase mpg when i could. I dont know anybody with a tuner and with so many options out there, it makes it tough. I mean this is just a pulling truck with good AC so i dont know that a high end tuner is really what i need, i just need one that will turn power up when i need and dial it back when i dont.

I just wish i could see a tuner or two, or 3, before i spend the money to find out i dont like it haha

Timers are pretty speedy but if you get one that? has the
gauges with it then that?s one less thing to worry about

(quoted from post at 00:50:10 06/21/18) Have you decided what to do yet ?

I talked a little more to the guys at diesel auto power (DAP) and and settled on 75 HP SAC injectors and a boost elbow for right now, i told them that i couldnt justify the cost of a tuner just yet. They said then the first thing they would do is bump up to these injectors, so at least i can get a sizeable power bump, since all the truck does is haul i am not to worried about dialing it back etc etc.

So they should be in today, so hopefully ill have them swapped out tomorrow morning, install EGT gauge, fuel pressure gauge and see how it acts.

the guy i talked to at DAP said they may cut me a break on a turner from them since i bought the injectors and stuff, he also said he used the quadzilla and bought a 30-40 dollar tablet from walmart and thats what he runs the tuner software on, and they said they would help me with it when if i have questions.

So all in all, i am happy with the help they provided.

Ill report how the truck changes once i get them in tonight, tomorrow

Sounds good . Let me know what your fuel Mileage does after
the injector swap I am contemplating going back To stock
injectors on truck because I don?t need the power and I would
really like a little more fuel mileage if I could get it on a truck
as heavy as yours maybe you won?t notice any difference?

A little more on this truck. it has a wierd little 3 position switch on the dash, economy, normal, and power, how it is wired in i dont know, but i know it works. Anyway, swapped out the injectors. the number 6 tube didnt even have a oring on it, and all the injectors looked the same except number 4, it was "dry" so to speak.

Anway, swapped it them all out, new orings on the tubes, fired it up and in economy pos, it would eventually get up to 77 mph, before there was NO chance it would do that, in the power mode you could really feel a difference, pulling hills it would back down to around 72/73 ish, but hung right in there and no smoke. so i put about 35-40 miles on it, and i was passing people, which is a first since ive had it haha. tomorrow ill put the trailer back on it and tool around, but now, ill fill the tanks and get some miles on it, i two trips to take with it as soon as i can, one of them is about 500 miles the other is about 400, so ill get some descent time and miles on it and let you know about what it does mileage wise, but keep in mind, loaded i am gonna be around 30 to 33k weight wise, so base anything off that hahah

I also bought the boost adjust elbow, but with no gauge i didnt install it yet.

I have seen guys arguing about where to put the pyro sensor, some say between #5 and 6 on the manifold, some are up by the turbo and some are downstream of the turbo, all my semi's have them post turbo, but those are 400 big cam cummins, not 5.9's. so im not sure what i want to do just yet.

But at THIS point it FINALLY feels like it is starting to become my 1-ton replacement finally. i need to run new 5" exhaust, i would like some jakes, and get a few other things done over some time, but i think im ready to start letting it rip.

I am open to suggestions on anything if you have any - HAHAH!

Running 30,000 I usually get around 11 to 12.5 mpg . Running
empty just the truck I get somewhere between 15.6 and 16.3 .
My 12 valve would get 17 to 17.5 but it was a thousand
pounds lighter and had a lot smaller bed on it .

so just looking around this morning and i found an HX40W Holset complete new for 250 bucks at walmart online with free shipping. that seems like a pretty reasonable price and they are listed for good up to 600 ish hp. so i went ahead and ordered it.

I still need to put on my egr and boost gauge, but ill do that when the new turbo shows up just spend a day and get all that stuff dialed in, i need to work on the AC in the truck so i can take some time and try to knock that out real quick. At some point bump up to 5" exhaust. Then sent it in for 4 wheel alignment. So i am hoping i can report back after July 4th with performance and mileage gains and losses.

i have a 78 kw W-900 that is a match for snowmans truck in smokey and the bandit, painted identical and all, so the 650 is hopefully going in this winter for a matching paint job only silver and black

I?ve always put the Pyro probe right in front of the turbo. the
manifold on these has a vane in it that spits the front half from
the back half the first one I ever did I drilled right into the vane
like a dummy and I had to Re drill it I always put the probe in
the back half of that split then I limit my egr to around 1250 to
be on the safe side although I have run em way higher .

That?s a good buy on that turbo is it new and js it a real holset
I guess there?s a chinese knockoff of the holset now . I?d sure
like to see a picture of that kenworth
