Licensing/Crossing the Border

All this talk about Class A CDL has me wondering something. Fellow i know up here in Canada has a F550 which is rated for 35,000lbs. So well over the 26,000 a CDL requires i believe. HOWEVER, in Canada a truck is not licensed by weight. I can drive that truck/trailer combo with my regular Class 5 license, the same one that all the population uses to drive their Civic around.
Once i cross the border, am i illegal? As the truck/trailer can easily weigh over 26,000, however it is still a non-commercial truck. Anyone know? ive gotten about 3 different answers calling various agencies in Montana and Idaho, the most likely places for me to go.

Is it a recreational vehicle? If so, you are good to go.

RV exemption applies to campers. Specifically motor homes.

Someone driving an F550 with a 30,000+ lbs GVW trailer isnt going to get away with that if they get nabbed.

If you are legally licensed in AB you are legal elsewhere. Just a quick look tells me a class 5 is good for a 2 axle vehicle with/without a non air brake trailer.

This is quite different than most other jurisdictions. I would carry a hard copy of the class definitions just in case someone needs to be educated.
