Help Identify a part

The 1993 12V 5.9L Cummins motor that we put into a 1994 Chevy dually has a cylinder under the exhaust manifold and forward of the turbo that is about 4" in diameter and about 15"-17" long. There is a coolant line on each end. The front coolant line starts from near the bottom of the head up front. The rear coolant line starts from the header at the bottom radiator hose. One mechanic said it was a heat exchanger for the fluid in the automatic transmission. Another one said it was a manual transmission oil cooler. Which one is right, and would it hurt anything to disconnect it on a truck with an NV4500 5 speed manual transmission? I'd appreciate some input on this.

So are there currently two un-used ports?

You mentioned coolant in and out but no other connections.

Never heard of or knew they even made a cooler for a manual tranny. There would have to be a pump in the tranny or auxillary pump.

If there are indeed more ports intended for automatic tranny fluid, and it is a canister vs a small rad, then it is a heat exchanger.
Meant to warm up the fluid sooner via rad water going into it more than to cool it down.

Well, I can't find any other lines entering or exiting this thing. Maybe they're just underneath and well hidden. A mechanic friend of mine who has
been working on trucks for over 55 years swears that it is an engine oil cooler, that the reason I can't see the lines is that there is a port on the
side of the block that directly connects to this thing, but I can't find any evidence anywhere to confirm this. I think he's wrong but just too proud
to admit it.

The stock O.E.M. oil cooler is directly behind the oil filter mount about where you describe the "mystery canister".
The oil filter mount is part of the oil cooler which is on the other side of rather large plate bolted to the side of the block.

This would be a stock transmission fluid cooler:

This is exactly what I have. So the 5.9 12v motor I bought must have been in a truck with an automatic transmission. My mechanic, a very dear friend
of mine with 2 Purple Hearts from Viet Nam was absolutely sure that this was an engine oil cooler. Oh well, I guess nobody's perfect. And I sure do
appreciate your response and the picture.

Look up from the bottom. You will see two transmission oil lines going into the bottom. The ends are rubber, but a crimped hydraulic line, not clamped. Those rubber ends are pretty big, they take a 7/8 wrench. Those coolers tend to rust out under the stainless clamps, where the salt sits and goes to work.I've done a few of them.
