I'm looking at trading pickups this summer. I now have a 1998 Ford light-duty F250 with a 5.4 in it. It gets 15-16 MPG if I drive it sensibly with little or no load; pulling a 28 ft camper it gets 7-8 MPG. I would like to get a newer pickup with a 4-door cab and a 6.5' box. You can get a 2006 or newer Ford F150 that fits these specs, or a lot wider choice of years in a Ford Super Duty. For the amount of pulling I do I am NOT interested in a diesel (why should I pay extra for a diesel engine just for the privilege of paying 80 cents more per gallon for the fuel that goes in it?). So my question is - should I get a newer F150 with the 5.4 or a newer Dodge 1500 with a 5.7 Hemi? Or go for the Ford Super Duty/Dodge 2500 Series? I would like to hear of anyone's experience with the Dodge Hemi, both highway mileage and loaded with a trailer mileage.

Ford 5.4,

Bought 2007 F150 Super Crew last summer. I love it. Recent trip from Central IL to Wis. Dells doing 75MPH got just over 16MPG. Towed a small RV 3000lb easy. Works pretty good to two my flatbed + 3010 Deere (about 8000lb) but gets the job done. Same engine in the base model super duty with pretty much same tow ratings so do not know what you gain there except the option of V10 or diesel. No experience with Dodge or Toyota.

Also the F150 is unbelievably quiet and smooth. I sometimes open the door to get out before I realize the engine is still running.

Heavier drivetrain and frame, more cooling... the F-150 is pretty much maxed out there, but the Superduty is just getting started. It takes a lot more beef to deal with a V-10 or diesel, and the 5.4 Superduty shares much of the truck with them. And from the factory the V-10 (a 5.4 with 2 more cylinders) is only a $600 option over the 5.4 and gets about the same milage. I think it would be worth it, after all you just spent $40k on a truck, what is $600 more.

They are actually on Consumer Reports "Do not recomend" list, which takes some doing at a place where they usually worship imports.

Toy-O-Tee must have pulled some of their advertising money from C. Reports parent company..... too bad :D

Because my '05 Ram 2500 with a Cummins and 6-speed manual will get 15-16 mpg hauling your truck AND your trailer. Running from W. Colo. to Weslaco, Tex. in January of this year the average mpg figured out to 21.4 mpg ..... I pulled a Toyota Camry on a towbar down and came back empty ..... stayed within +3 miles an hour of the posted speed limit. With my 24' goose, 8' camper and a VA Series Case behind (Truck, trailer, camper & tractor = 15,600 lbs.) I get 15-17 on semi-flat ground and 12-13 up the passes so the 80¢ difference (right now it's $3.27/regular vs $3.96/diesel here) is still a better deal for me. 8)

I know that Dodge uses tech to turn off cylinders when not needed on the freeway, does Ford do the same? Every ford I have ever owned was always a gas hog. Ran good, performed good, but always sucked the gas down. Didn't matter when it was cheap...

I'm guessing you don't want a GM? I had a 5.3l 1500 and it got good milage on the road and decent towing. Good truck no issues at all. They have the tech that turns off cylinders at chevy now too. Stay away from the 6.0l as it will suck the fuel down, but the 5.3 is a sipper.

Ford doesn't have it, and really it is almost worthless in a heavy fullsize truck, the sight of a hill and it has to kick all 8 back in to maintain speed. Dodge added it and their rating gained only 1mpg.
For 2009 Ford is coming out with a 6-speed that should increase both milage and drivability. They are to be getting more power in 2009 also, but they still haven't released the numbers yet.

I like Fords, IMO by far and away they make the best truck all the way around, there is a reason they sell as many as they do.

But to each their own.

In 1999 Ford and I parted ways after 20+ years. Too many problems, too few benefits.

Went to Chev with a 2000 Silverado, ext cab vs std, auto vs manual, 3.73 vs 3.55 gears, larger tires, A/C vs no A/C and 290 hp vs 185 hp. Guess what? The chev also got 5 mpg better than the Ford!

Looked at Ford diesels in 2003, but bought a Duramax. Good thing too as the 6.0l ford has been a real problem child.

When millions of vehicles are sold, there are bound to be good ones, great ones and some like my old ford clunker that are better off shot and left in a ditch!

All I know is that Ford best pull their corporate head out of their trash compactor 'cuz the Toyota and other Japan trucks are way better.

I've had good luck so far with Dodge and Ford so I'm going to stick with one of them. And I'm looking at one that is several years old so that eliminates Toyota for a few years. IMHO buying ANY vehicle new is a waste of money - let the first owner take that big hit on first few year's depreciation.

I've got a buddy that has had excellent luck with dodge trucks. (Well, I had to jump start his truck once with my rickety old Ford...)

His only wish is that the 1500's still had manual trans / hemi as an option. I think he has about 400,000 on 3 Hemi trucks.

Ford V10's are going cheap if you want the towing / hauling. Fuel use is close to the 5.4. Just an option.

Tom, we have a 05 Durango with the 5.7L Hemi. Empty on the highway it gets about 18MPH at 75-80MPM. Pulling a 7000# trailer I still get 14-15 at 70-75MPH. Not the same as a truck but similar. No power issues with this setup. Just to see what would happen one time going thru the mountains of WV, I set the cruise at 75 when I got to the bottom of a large (6% grade) hill. I was still going 74 at the top of the hill. It downshifted and ran a few R's but didn't lose any speed. Wouldn't advise running the cruise thru the mountains normally.

I have a 2500 ram with the Hemi, automatic, and 4:10 gears for a daily driver and a back up trailer truck. daily driving 12-14 miles and when I put the 32 foot gooseneck it drops to 6-8 miles as long as I drive it reasonably.

Tom, I have a 2005 Dodge 1500 4dr with the Hemi. I bought the truck new and it now has around 40,000 on it. Pulling my 32' camper I get around 10MPG. With no trailer and driving right I can get 18-20mpg. Enough power to pull the camper but no extra. Pulling my 16' trailer loaded with 860 Ford tractor and get 13-14mpg
