2000 Dodge diesel intermitent no start, then no start at all

A friend's 2000 Dodge diesel had intermittent no start condition, now won't start at all.

Has an aftermarket electric fuel pump with good pressure and flow to the IP.

Where to start looking... do they have something like the Ford/IH cam sensor that gets intermittent?

More than likely has an issue with the injection pump. Chances are the advance piston is scored if not stuck in the housing or the diaphragm in the hydraulic head is cracked. OR the PSG (pump ecu) is bad. Seen all of the above many times.

Does it have a check engine light on?? I have had to replace the crank position sensor on my 1999 3500 twice. This sensor is located behind the starter. Pull the starter and there it is. The sensor is around $65. The first thing I would do is check for engine codes.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!

I finally got back to it with the scan tool today... Code PO336... crankshaft position sensor... have one ordered. Will report back in a few days.

You don't need a scan to tool to find the codes. Just turn the ignition switch on and off 3 times and it will flash the codes in the mileage window.

You will need a 10 mm 12 point socket to take out the starter bolts. There are three of them. Hope you get it going again.

Replaced the crankshaft position sensor and all seems to be well.

Would have been a lot simpler if the last guy in there hadn't cross-threaded one of the starter bolts and mangled the dipstick tube.

Check the hot battery cable Mine has a small wire on the left battery with an eyelet over the bolt. It broke from acid and it would not start till I fixed it

But, [b:ecc7735b2e]IF[/b:ecc7735b2e] you have a scan tool.................
