Synthetic vs. Petroleum base wheel bearing grease

Getting ready to clean and pack the wheel bearings on my loboy equipment trailer. Since it is a chore to clean and repack six hubs and bearing sets, I am thinking of using synthetic grease. Does anyone have experience with using synthetic grease for truck and trailer bearings? Are there ratings to look for? Any brands that you would recommend?

I use John Deere synthetic grease in my trailer wheel bearingsand tractor wheel bearings seems to do a good job no Wheel bearingfailures so far

How old of trailer? Most semi trailers for the past 20 or 25 years have used gear oil, easy to change and excellent bearing life. Some guys pack em with grease rather than fix the seals and it is not as good in long run.

It is an eager beaver 6 ton trailer, may not have been correct to use the term loboy. I don't think that the hubs and seals were designed for gear oil. I am into the job now and am using Amsoil #2 synthetic grease, as I saw good reviews on this grease for wheel bearing application on other forums.

IMHO, no matter what grease you use the hubs will still need to periodically be cleaned out, and new grease and seals installed because of moisture and dirt entry to avoid downtime on the road.

Why would the hubs and seals not be made for oil? I see oil filled bearings on trailers all the time. This is on trailers for pickups. I would just see about some oil seals from Stemco. They are the best seals going. I have used them for 20 years . I tried some of the others. Only get about 2-3 years out of them. A Stemco will go for close to 10 years. The cost is about the same.

That's some sticky grease, keeping that truck and trailer from sliding down that steep grade.
