2012 GMC HD 2500 question

Just bought a 2012 GMC 2500HD with the 6 speed auto trans. Dumb question, how does the manual mode feature work? Do I select what gear I want with the +/- button or does it start out in 1st and I need to manually shift it with the button until I reach the gear I want such as 4th or 5th.

Not sure about the GM, but, my Ford : place lever in "M " (manual ): use the +/- to select any gear to pull out in up to 3rd. All shifts are controlled by the selector button as long as in manual mode. A friend has a Chevy and he tells me his is similar.

It will shift automatically up to what gear you have selected. So if you have a trailer behind you and are in the mountains, put it in "M" and hit the plus button up to 4. Transmission will automatically shift up and down through 4th gear but not go into 5th or 6th. Awesome feature!

Thank you! I kinda figured thats how it works. I asked the salesman and I got zero answer. Drove it 185 miles home and absolutely love it!!! It runs better than expected and averaged 14.3 mpg running 80 mph all the way.

On my 11 F150, 6 spd auto I like how you can start out in 3rd gear in "M" when on very slippery surfaces, much harder to spin when getting rolling on ice.
