Goose neck hitch

Hello I bought a chevy 3500 to pull a goose neck , where should I mount the ball in reference to the axle I have been told 2" ahead 6"ahead 8" ahead What is the best ?? Thanks Bryan

I own a 2001 3500. If I remember right, the ball is located 6 inchs ahead of the rear axle. I went with the B&W hitch. Installed it myself. There were NO choices or options as to the location of the ball. B&W did the engineering to determine the optimum location. I did not think it would wise to try and outguess them.

Please do not attempt to build your own hitch. Way too many liabilities at issue.
 
I usually went with 6", but as far as weight and ballance goes there won't be much difference so all those are exceptable. If you have a flatbed make sure you check for clearance when turning. Some of those get 10' flat decks and with a standard axle you can end up hitting the trailer when turning.
