Swapping Dodge Motors

I have a 5.9 12 v Cummins motor with only 78K on it in a "91 Dodge 250 with an automatic tranny. I am looking for an older Dodge ext. cab dually to put it in but can't find one. But I have found a "91 Reg. cab dually in great shape with a 318 in it and a 5 speed Getrag tranny. Would any of you guys care to comment on what would be required to drop that 5.9 in it after removing the 318? Sure would appreciate your input.

My 95 Dodge/Cummins 2500 had heavy front suspension. Things like ball joints were the same as a 3500. Looks like you will need to build up the front end.

Are you swapping engin and trans or just engine. On my 95 we changed the whole body from 2wd 1500. We left core support with radiator on frame and swapped cab frt fenders and bed kept dash and frmt wiring harmed from diesel truck . On yours your going to need radiator dash wiring harness cross members exhaust and hangers and motor mounts Feul tank and lines

I will be removing the 318 motor from the "91 350 dually, leaving the Getrag 5 speed tranny in it, and removing only the 5.9 Cummins motor from the other "91, leaving the automatic tranny in it. I will put this motor into the 350 dually. Since both trucks will be side by side like pretendfarmer assumed, it seems to me that we ought to already have most everything we need for the swap.

I'm wondering, since the truck you are swapping the Cummins into was a 318 truck, will the axle ratio be way too low? Might want to check into that. -Andy

I would guess at worst, 4.10 gearing. So not way too low and if the majority of his travels are around town hauling, that could be preferred.

Far as I know, there was only one Getrag used in Dodge pickups, the Getrag G360. I would highly recommend you venture to cumminsforum.com and take a look around the 1st generation forums and post these questions there. I don't know if the bell housings are the same or what. Those guys can give you a bolt by bolt explanation of everything.
