Weigh stations

I am going to haul a farmall A with a car hauler trailer down I-95 in VA. I am not a commercial operator. Do I need to stop at the weigh stations?
I don't stop with my camper.

The guys who haul classic cars to shows never stop at weigh stations. Why would a classic farm tractor be any different?

Legally, you may or may not be required to stop, but more often than not, trying to be in compliance with the law will only open a whole can of worms.

Best bet is to pretend ignorance and just cruise right on by.

You do know that the guys that haul to all the big classic car shows have a pass for weigh stations they don't have to stop. If your truck and trailer are in good shape and in comply with law and load is tied down properly what can of worms are you going to open.

If this is your tractor & you have proof of ownership,
if your equipment is up to inspection standards,
follow the instructions at each weigh station you pass ...

Often, it is not so much what the law is: but: how agressive the enforcement is. Best to be legal and obey signs. If they want to harass you, they will. Disobeying signs only servs to get another ticket. You will most likely be waved on thru the scales, or they may be closed.

If you are worried just drive around the scale house and then problem solved
Theres a app for smart phone. Called scale buddy it shows all scales in your area and if open or closed I use it all time
Just make sure tractor is tied down properly so they have no reason to look you over if you drive bye scale

I bet the VA DOT would just love to have the guys with the big shinny decked out dualie ton crew cab pickups used only as a daily drivers drive over the scales every time they go by. :)^D

Oh they can find something wrong with a new truck or trailer or both. We have had stories of an officer that wants the chains crossed up by Gaylord. Boy we will go around if I get stopped for that nonsense. It is not always the equipment. Not chained properly or no fire extinguisher no triangles and such.

I've hauled tractors ( my own property ) up and down florida and georgia i75 and i95, and across i10 thru texas and back. dually, gn trailer nad tractors.

I passed many a weigh station, never stopped, never been pulled for passing. And plenty of them had DOT setting on the outgoing berm and they would zoom off and pull other people over.. so I know they were looking.

They probably see a truck with no dot # or business stickers, assume passanger and non commercial, not for hire, then see an antique tractor on back.. not usually something work related, and let you go.

that said, I'd still be bound down good and have basic safety and emergency equipment with me in case of problems where you might need it. IE. be prudent..

The short answer is no......... We are talking about a tractor that maybe weighs 3000 lbs at the most. Tie her down good and get down the road. Make sure are brakes and lights are all functional. Unless you are a commercial operator(and your not) this isn't even an issue for you.

According to Va. law requires any truck registered gross weight exceeds 7,500 lbs. must cross scales commercial or not.
