ratchet straps w/ flat hooks

Does the flat hook clip on the outside of the stake pocket or facing out, inserted in the pocket? An inquiring mind wants to know

I haul logs on weekends for some extra money, and when we hook the straps over the rub rail they go either way, just so long as we don't have twists in the straps. If it lands where strap has to go over outside of rub rail, it hooks inside, if it lands where it goes inside, it hooks outside, just depends on how it lands or is rolled when it is thrown. No other way to hook the strap without at least part of it sticking past rub rail, least not that I know of. It must at least be looped so it is pulling the hook down, so if it gets loose it won't become unhooked. Just my opinion though. Pic of getting ready to finish throwing straps and tying things down.

Another couple thoughts, not to say one method is right or wrong, just different. On the rare times that I pulled flat bed we were taught that a half twist in the strap prevented the annoying buzz noise caused by wind. Also to roll the strap with the hook on outside of roll. Hold the hook & toss the roll over the top. Reason given was that if somebody walked past the opposite side, unseen, the roll could hit him/her, & have an "Oopsy, sorry about that". If holding the bare end, & the hook klonked somebody on the head, could result in serious, maybe fatal injury.

Should you use rub rails for cargo securement?

Thanks for that John. It summarizes what goes through my mind pretty much every time I load my two pulling tractors. The chains for both ends of the big one, and rear of small one, go inside of the rub rail, but I use a strap for the front of the small one, so the hook goes over the rub rail, but it is at the front where it tapers in so it doesn't stick out so far. But I still always feel guilty doing it. Now I don't need to worry. Wouldn't you think that a manufacturer would grasp the opportunity and provide hook points for straps on the inside. All it would take would be pockets with a bar in the middle.

I would say neither, the flat hook should be positioned so that in case you sideswipe anything the hook is not affected at all. And the purpose of a rub rail is to protect the strap or chain from being swiped from the mounting location and leaving the load unsecured. I almost never see this being done. In other words position the hook to the innermost location facing in toward the truck or trailer. Also when I strap something down to my trailer that is tall I always twist the strap one revolution, if I don't when going down the interstate I would have twenty straps all "singing" a tune because of the vibration. One simple twist doesn't affect the securement. JB
