New and improved gas cans?

What happen to all the normal 5 gallon gas cans?? Is there a new government law about ventilation of gas cans or are they trying to reinvent the child proof pill bottle? I mean, it seems it would take 5x as long to pour gas out the "half spout" compared to an old school spout, plus you have to push on the spout to make the gas flow. That would be a good workout throwing 5 gallons of gas above your shoulder for 10 minutes when filling up the tractor. I can see it now..."old farmer farmed for 90 years and never had any shoulder issues until the invention of that new ventilated spout. Are they all like this now?

Save all the 2 to 5 gal oil cans or jugs that you buy and no problems then. May not correct but how much intrusion do you want.

Rural King sells a replacement spout for them that doesn't have all of the modern nonsense. $10 - I was looking at them today. I made a pair of oilers for my NH round baler, out of plastic gas cans. Coons climbing up on the baler broke the spouts off of both of them. Still - it ticks me off that the "fixit" spout costs $10, and a new can complete with the rinky-dink vented spout only costs $8.

I bought 3 new jugs takes 10 min. to pour 5 gallon out maybe more SO !! I gutted the spout drilled a hole in the rear installed valve stem from a truck wheel to vent now works GOOD ! Heck with gov. regs !!!

I have looked at the new ones and will keep my old Chilton plastic gas cans with the vent on can. As you get older its hard to lift those 6 gallon cans over head to fill tractor. I have fixed up a high out put electric fuel pump with filter and pump the gas cans into tractor.

always looking in local c-list for old 5-gal gas cans, with vent on other end,, they can throw away the new ones before i buy one..

Easy fix. I go to Orscheln's and buy an old type fitting and put it on the new type gas can problem goes away

I have five of these EZ pour spouts. They are a little pricey since you have to buy the kit, including pieces you don't need. I think they are well worth it rather than these impossible to pour from new spouts.http://t.external_link.com/en/store/spout-kit-for-old-gas-cans?cm_vc=-10005

The position of the actual spout on the can I have learned is at an angle so you have to tilt the can completely upside down to empty the entire can.

All the reason to get an elevated fuel tank so I can just fill up with a fuel nozzle.

Thanks for all the help.

I have a couple of empty 5gal cans that hydraulic oil and gear oil come in, rinse them good and get a metal funnel and that solved my problem with the new can and spouts that are now on the market. I wonder if any of the people that approved the new spouts ever tried filling a tractor up with fuel.

Blitz gas can co got sued out of existence over some idiot burning himself up. Lawyers and folks with no common sense are the problem.
You can't regulate stupidity away.

Interesting. I guess that makes sense of why the cans are the way they are.

The word "common" in common sense, is probably going to be nonexistent in the near future. It will just be sense. It's the classic scenario of not taking responsibility for your own actions. It's the blind leading the blind.

Good! They made garbage with steel too thin to drop without damage , and plastic cans with threads that strip.

Get a good twist lock funnel and remove the goofy safety spout. Drill a hole in the back top and poke a cork in it so when you pull the cork out it can get air. Presto! Quick pour.

I try to buy oil in 2.5 gallon jugs. They have a big cap. Easy to fill and empty. use a funnel though.

The metal safety cans we have at work come with funnels attached to them you have to pull back on the spring loaded lid to pour but pours fast

lol!!! reminded me of last week...buddy and I roofing a shed for a guy. Guy has dump truck that we used for the old shingles etc.. any way he said it was out of gas that my buddy needed to fill it before we move it. Guy had left us a "new" 5 gal filled... I laughed my but off watch in him try to menuver and get the thing to poor. I believe he ended up breaking the on/off thing in frustration.. all i heard was "Good...I broke the lousy thing...now it works" lol

For myself I have those older plastic ones that had the hello plug on the top back as a vent. most of the plug covers have been broke off but golf tees work well..and no I dont golf...

Navajo, Since you are new here you wouldn't know that this is a regular topic. It is on the every other month schedule. We all give our own stories of how we hate the new type containers. My response is always that I like the steel Eagle cans with the plastic spouts. They are by far the lowest cost because they last ten time longer than the plastic cans, and as Bill Markusky pointed out they empty out very quickly. I have two of them, one of which I bought back in the 70s

(quoted from post at 21:05:49 05/16/15) I thought the EPA made gas can have a "no spill" spout to prevent spilling fuel on the ground.

Yeah, guess so..........but they still work on ant hills!
