Mounting Winch on Gooseneck

Hey guys! We bought 9500lb rapid mount winch for our trailers. It is set up to be used in a 2" hitch receiver so we will be able to swap between trailers. Should be easy enougb to fab something for the car trailer. Anyway, on our gooseneck, it has two smaller pieces of C-channel welded to the neck risers and at the top it has a piece of 8" I-beam welded between them (cant see it in the picture but arrow points to its location). That looks to be an easy place to mount the winch. Wondering if it is strong enough as-is, or if it should be gusseted? Secondly, is it bad to have the winch mounted that high above the deck? This is a winch that will get used a couple times a year at most. Thanks!

While it will be much more rigid mounted low, the frame joints are strong enough to not bend when you hit the brakes with a full load. Does the trailer deck tilt?

you need to determine the section modulus of the I beam and then apply the 9500 lb load to determine the bending stresses in the I beam

those C chanels are not strong enough but the beam should be if it is laying flat so to speak. You have to remember that 99% of the time your winch loads will be rolling pulls.

I mounted mine up high as I thought it would help get things up the ramp which is where I expect the hardest pull. Once things are on the deck of the trailer they are no problem to move. I reinforced the beam at the top and I have had no problems.

By necessity i installed the winch low on my tilting flatbed. I added a non-tilting foredeck, and put half of a roller fairlead on the front of the tilt deck to prevent cable damage when it's up. Works great.

Thanks for the reply...thats fairly similar to mine.
Do you like that Gatormade trailer? I've been
considering them for an upgrade.

I use mine in the receiver on the back of my truck and use a block to raise or lower the cable I simply use a chain and lengthen or shorten to get the proper block height , sometimes I even use a second block on the tractor to double the line . This only works with a horseback.
