loading a heavy tractor with winch on gooseneck

I have a JD 7520 that I hauled a few times on my gooseneck (yes its rated to haul the tractor). Tractor weighs probably around 18-20k. I've been wanting to add a winch to my trailer to pull up a dead tractor. The 7520 threw a rod a while back and I'd like to rig up an 18,000 lb winch with snatch block and haul it to my mechanic. Has anyone ever hauled up a tractor this heavy onto a trailer with an electric winch? Is this enough winch to get up and over the dovetail?

The more lines you use in your snatch block the easier it will pull it . Also the slower it will move. It could be done with a 3000 winch if you use enough lines. I have never done it. As I usually use a tractor and long chain, to pull along side of the trailer, from the front corner. If you need to steer it, a big bar in behind the wheel, against the spindle will turn the wheels for you.

If it is a rolling load, you don't need a winch that is rated for what the tractor actually ways. Look at the second page in the link. It's a copy of a Superwinch owner's manual. A 12,000 lb winch is rated at 42,492 lbs on a 20% grade. Now if you're talking about dragging the tractor up the trailer with all the wheels locked up, that's a different story. I have a 12,000 lb and haven't come across anything that I couldn't drag up on the trailer yet. Just make sure you're sitting down when you start looking at prices for the big 12,000 lb + electric winches!

I have a Harbor Freight 8,000 winch on my trailer and have loaded several heavy tractors and pieces of equipment including a J.D. 350 dozer that was dead and pretty much frozen. I carry 3 snatch blocks in the tool box and don't hesitate to use them. I have found that it's a lot better on the winch to use a snatch block than over heat the winch with a straight line pull. Just get a couple snatch blocks at your favorite farm store (they don't have to be the most expensive ones) and use them. That tractor will walk right up on the trailer especially if the tires are all up on it. Just my thoughts, Keith

I helped a friend of mine load a dead 5020 on a trailer once, trailer didn't have a winch so we put my 8000lb electric in the truck reciever, ran the cable over a piece of fire wood to keep it from dragging on the trailers metal, used it double line and we used a tractor with a double drawbar to help. I know the piece of wood hurt our pulling capacity, but it was neccessry. Neither one could have done it alone.

Another "advantage" to using snatch blocks is it slows down the pull, giving more time for tricky loadings. I have the HF 9 and 12 K units, not bad for China. Love the remote for loading without help. There are schematics online to convert the remote unit to most other winches.

don't end up like this...lol

Thanks for the advice. I've orderd some 5/8 inch cable with hooks and some snatch blocks. Going to use my JD 4520 to pull it on the gooseneck. Still shopping for a winch.

Another suggestion for the winch - get a cheap 50' extension cord and a male and female plug. Cut the winch remote cord, add the plugs, and then you can add the extension cord so you can steer the tractor while loading it.

That is an excellent idea! I need to do that to my winch cord. Will a 3-wire cord and 3-prong plug work for that?

Check how many pins are on your remote plug, but
the majority of them the winches will be just
three wires, so yes, a 3 wire cord and 3 prong
plug will work. Just remember to get a male and
female plug and install the male plug on the
remote side because 1 wire is hot all the time.
