How to crack your windshield

We had a wet snow event here that took out power to over 100,000. The slush that pulled limbs down onto wires had my car pretty well covered in ice about three inches thick the next morning. I left the car running for about twenty minutes while I cleared the driveways, and then finished clearing off the car, and found the cracked windshield. Apparently too much of a temperature differential between inside and outside.

defrosters will do that. In the winter you can
also crack a wind shield with a snow blower. Don't
ask me how I know!!!!!!!!!!

I did the same thing. It was about 5 below and I let the car run with ice on the windshield. The defroster was too hot, and I bought a new windshield.

I have had windshields here that have been
hit by a stone in the summer. I remember
because i thought it hit hard enough to chip or
break it that day. But it didn't. The first few
real cold days of winter, using defrost the
crack has appeared, right where the stone hit
in the summer. usually in the top, across the
middle or bottom at wiper blade park level.
depending where the hit was. There was no
visible chip to the eye in the crack spot that
opened up either.
Have seen similar when stones hit tractor
windows during hot days it doesn't chip or
break, park it in the shed, it cools down over
night, go the next morning and the windows all
on the floor because it shattered with the temp
change.

Temperature diff will do that.

As a young and dumb kid I got the bright idea to use hot water
to clear the windshield of ice on Moms new car.

Needless to say I wasn't too popular with my folks for a few
days.

Yup, I live in Alaska and that happens every year. Sometimes it helps if you clean all the snow and frost off the windows first. As the car heats up leave the heater on defroster and on the floor not all on the windshield. The slower you heat up the windshield the better off you are. But if you have a small chip, it is just a matter of time, nothing is going to help but a new windshield.

In Alaska the best way to crack your windshield is put in a new one.... You will never make it home! :shock:
