!993 Dodge Cummins belt alignment

I have noticed that every time I install a new
serpentine belt on my 5.9 Cummins motor, it
rubs against the underside of the tensioner
pulley and eventually frays on the outside edge
resulting in the belt eventually being narrower
than it was when new. My friends "91 5.9 does
the same thing. If you look at the water pump
pulley, you can see that the belt passes over
it at a definite angle toward the motor as a
result of the underside of the tensioner pulley
pulling it that way. Do any of you know how I
could correct this? Thanks.

My 1992 with the 5.9 Cummins did the same thing, twice in a row. When I stuck the old used belt back on -it worked fine. I just assumed I screwed up and had the belt one groove off on one of the pulleys, but do not know for sure. The problem seems to be on the AC compressor pulley but I'm not sure. Last belt that got one groove chewed off was a Goodyear Gatorback. The old used belt I stuck back on that works fine is also a Goodyear Gatorback. Both part #s 4080830

Walter,
Normally, the problem is at the generator. You have to shim the generator for correct alignment if not OEM, and sometimes even if OEM.
I used a laser light for assistance, and finally used the move, shim and test method till alignment was found.
The root cause I found later was the fan mount. While Cummins part, it was a little off.

Just saw this post, so this may not help. On my 01 5.9 it did same thing with Gator Back or any other belt. Last month the fan hub bearing started to growl. Replaced with new bearing now new belt rides prefect without cutting one rib off. I think that the bearing was off a little causing the belt to be chewed off. :D
