what kind of hitch is this?

What is this kind of hitch. We just got our first gooseneck hitch (BigTex Dump Trailer) and we only thought we had the ball as pictured in the front of the plate. Found out that the ball is in the wrong spot and can't be used. I was looking around and found this hitch that hides itself. It is different looking and seems like it locks in place when you pick it up, but with a little bit of pressure it will slide back down.

What do we need? Is this correct?

That is setup for a mini 5th wheel that would be on the trailer side. My dad had a setup just like that in his ford years ago. Hooks up just like a big truck only the spots are switched and the 5th wheel is much smaller.

Ok, so what do I need to do? Get rid of that and get a regular ball like our dump trailer calls for? OR should I try and locate a mini-fifth wheel hitch? Can I find a ball that will adapt to this setup? I'm not sure how the mini fifth wheel peice is removed or if it can be.

I would strongly suggest getting rid of all that stuff and installing a B&W turn-over ball hitch. It installs below the bed, and bolts to the frame of the truck. The ball sticks up through the bed floor. If you're pulling a dump trailer, the ball needs to be bolted to the frame of the truck.

I looked at everything and it is all bolted to the frame rails so it should be good. I'm just wanting to know what I need to look for or get that will slide down in what I have.

Surely there are adaptable attachments for this style of hitch. Maybe there is a ball on the opposite side of the mini 5th wheel hitch.

What do you all think?

There are no adaptors that I know of to convert the king pin into a ball.
What's the story with the ball thats in the plate already? How it that attached? If the ball it attached in a safe and secure manner that won't break I'd flip the plate around, if its questionable I'd take it out completely and put a B&W in.

Hmm, are you SURE you can't pull that "reverse 5th wheel" out and flip it over?

If you can push it back down with a little effort, it's not locked in place. You should have to pull some sort of pin/lever underneath the wheel well to unlock it so it retracts.

It sure looks like the bottom one of those turnover-ball type hitches to me. Not a B&W but a clone/workalike.

The B&W hitch also locates the ball in the most ideal position for your specific truck, in regards to forward/aft weight distribution.

mkirsch,

If the king pin is like the one we have it has no lock to hold the pin up, just a detent, because it is not necessary when the mini 5th latches it will not let the pin drop, it can't lift out because it is bigger on the bottom and it does not need to hold any of the pin weight because it will rest on the flat plate and not on the pin like a ball hitch does. It works just like a tractor trailer 5th wheel, in fact the pin is the same size.

After some searching through Google, the "Holland Retractable Kingpin Hitch" is the closest thing to what I have (bottom and top side). The only difference that I can see is that my plate looks bigger and it has a raised square portion that has been welded instead of a solid piece of plate on top. If you look at the pictures I posted and the picture of that Holland hitch, you'll see what I mean. The bottom side of the Holland hitch looks just like the bottom of ours.

Now.....how does it lock in place? Can you remove the kingpin hitch and replace with a ball?

It has no positive lock, only a detent to hold it up. I can't be pulled out any higher because it is larger on the bottom for a positive stop. Once the hitch latched it is held captive.

There is no ball that can be installed that I know of.

Ok. So why when I pull it up it stays but when I lower weight of trailer on it, it goes back into the retracted position? It also does that if I step on it.

When it does lock into place, how would one lower it back down?

It is not made to lower a trailer onto it?????????

Search for inverted fifth wheel to see how it works

The adapter is you loosen the bolts holding you hitch piece in the trailer. Then install the inverted 5th wheel piece into the trailer. Just let the front of the trailer set, so you slide the trailer hitch over the pin from the back side. Just like hitching up a semi trailer to the truck. Then gently pull forward against the trailer, to check that the hitch latched to the pin. Don't pull hard or you will bend your trailer jacks.

Looks to me like the big black plate has 2 open bolt
holes in the front... Can you unbolt the whole
thing, move it back so your using those two holes
and have two open at the back? I'm guessing your
ball is too far forward in the bed, and it looks
like moving it back that far would probably be about
right.
