Good Dodge Motor

I just acquired an old 1987 or so Dodge D350, single cab, single wheels. The truck is pretty much trashed, but the 12 valve, 5.9 Cummins motor purrs like a kitten. Has 178K showing on the odometer. Previous owner verifies that is accurate. I plan to pull the motor and take the rest of the truck to the salvage yard. Anybody got any idea what that motor might be worth?

Maybe $500 to $1000 depending on your area and the demand for VE pump 6BT cummins engines. More if you want to sit on till someone really wants or needs it.

A non intercooled VE motor? Take a look around. Whatever a good running Ppumped 12 valve is going for in your area, your engine is worth $600 less. VE pumps are limited.

Edit: the B series Cummins wasn't put in a Dodge pickup till 1989 model year. So someone put that engine in there. You should find out more about it.

I have a junky 91 with a 5.9 Cummins in it and the rotary pump. Had a guy come up to me at the farm store, and offered 3500 then 4000 them 4500. I should have sold I guess. He wanted it for a project for a 16 yr old. Wanted the rotary pump, because they started quicker and gave no problems. So you never know. Vic

I guess an idiot is born every minute. That guys crazy for offering that kind of money for a VE 12 valve. Around here Ive seen Ppumped 94-98 12 valve motors go for $1500 or so.
Edit: I've seen 1st gen trucks such as your go for much more money than $4000 but that would be a mint condition truck.
I paid $4000 for my 1997 Ram 2500 with a 12 valve and 94000 miles. Not a rip in the seats or a stain in the carpet.

I'm glad you can buy a good Dodge diesel that cheap.
Short story. Brother-in-law came to visit from
Texas. We went to Walmart in the old Dodge. Parked
it back by the tire dept. When we came out a guy was
setting in a Grand Cherokee by it. When we got close
he said You guys want to sell that Dodge. Happens
all the time. I had just told BIL shouldn't go in
the Dodge because some-one will want to buy it. Vic

If it's an original non-intercooled diesel with an automatic, save the rear-end. They only came with 3.07's in a Dana 71 for 2 1/2 years, and you can't get fresh ring and pinions for them, only swap out the axle.

What else is good on it? Might be able to sell some parts. Hang onto the fender badges with the "Cummins Turbo Diesel" on them, too.

Thanks Guys for the info. I am actually reluctant
to sell this motor. I feel more inclined to find a
good body I could put it in. I have been driving a
1993 D-250/350 with a 5.9 12V in it for about 7
years now. It has about a half a million miles on
it and continues to impress me with well over 20
mpg and power enough to pull anything I put behind
it. It cranks immediately on one battery in the
coldest weather. I've never owned a truck like
this. No wonder that motor is in such high demand.
I just wish the body was as tough as the motor is.
