I bought a tractor just inside Ind. I need to go through Ill to get it, what will the DOT expect from me? I am not for hire, its an 18000# trailer. I live in Iowa and have no CDL, have never had any reason to get it. If I am transporting my own tractor will Ill leave me alone?

where is it at in In? The reason I ask is there is a scale on US-24 right at the IN-IL line. Hwy 17 over to momence is the popular way to go. There are many others also. I think IL will not be a problem. IA will give you more trouble than IN or IL put together.

From what I read if you are a farmer you don't need one. It might be wise to call Ill. DOT and ask. If you come across I80 their is a scale just east of Joliet,Ill. and every thing over 8 ton has to go over scales.

Its around Remington, thought I might go 80 then hit 39 before Joliet It would be shorter to go through Chicago area but not sure I wanna fight that mess.

You will stay away from a lot of traffic going that way. Are you going to take 24 from 39 to Remington? Those scales on 24 are in Ill. and are not always open. Like I said give Ill. dot call about cdl.

Not sure how it's done but my Grandson runs his semi all the way to Florida on farm plates. He told me he goes on line before he leaves and buys a permit for farm use to go thru each state. He hauls hay down. He said he very seldom gets checked. He also hauls cattle some times to the east coast to be shipped for export with farm plates.

These rules are changing daily because of Map-21 so what I say today may not be good tomorrow. Heck it may not be good today cause I only up to date on a rule as of yesterday.

You really did not give us all the details so let me get out my crystal ball and answer question that do not pertain to you while trying to cover all bases.

You said never had a need for a CDL. Is that because you are 26,000 lbs GVWR or less or is that because you have farm tags and Iowa does not require a CDL for farmers.

My crystal ball says the second one.
So this farmer exemption is only good within 150 miles from your farm and then only when you are moving product to or from wholesale or retail distribution point.

Quote......
Question 4: Is the transportation of farming equipment from a farm to a repair shop, either by the farmer or the shop, covered by the 150 air-mile agricultural exemption?
Answer 4: No. The exemption for the transportation of farm supplies is limited to movements from a wholesale or retail distribution point to the farm. There is no exemption when farm supplies are moved from a farm to another point.

But that is usually not enforced.

Even over looking that you will be more than 150 miles from your farm and in another state so you will need a CDL if your GVWR is 26,001 or more.

Now lets move to farm tags since my crystal ball says you have them.
Usually joining states have reciprocity agreements. So your farm tags will be good in Ill. The catch comes in that ILL will most likely require you to have a affidavit from your county auto dept stating plate is for farming, and not something else. I know that sounds craze since it is a farm tag but that is what most states require. Call Ill DOT and ask them what you need to be sure.

So the short answer is.....
You have a GVWR of 26,001 lbs or more and Ill catches you over there without a CDL they will tear you a new one.

the easiest way out here would be to just get somebody with a cdl to go get the truck and bring it to you, then you go get a cdl, the rules for running without one change all the time, mostly due to abuse and politicians, its just cheaper and easier to get the licence, then your covered, instead of getting reamed a new one or spending time in jail , or trying to find the one obscure rule that applies to what your using the truck for, which may or may not be known by the cop that stops you

You did not say if it was a GN or bumper trailer. The GN will require a CDL and DOT #. The scales at Sheldon are about 2 miles east on 24 if I remember right. You could skirt around through the country to miss that. Go to Google maps.

I have a tractor CC CASE maybe 4500 lb at most I would be happy to pay you to bring to western ind. 612 699 0011 I could meet you if your pickup is not close to me.

JJS,

If you are in Iowa, and have a P&K dealer near you, talk with them. They did a good job of hauling for me.

They caught a guy from my area hauling tobacco (the cop thought it was cannabus) anyways he was hauling with trailer the cop told him to park it and get a driver with cdl. as soon as the cop left he took off again was able to deliver and get back but he had to get a cdl or pay a fine .there are differnt levels of cdl .good luck
