RV tags on class 8 truck

For those of you who have done this, tell me what steps were taken, especially anyone from Indiana.

Are you trying to pull a 5th wheel camper with a class 8 truck such as...

Or do you want to convert a class 8 into a full motorhome that can pull a larger trailer such as...

Or are you thinking; I can throw a 120 converter and a ice box into the sleeper of a truck and call it a RV.

I think the latter.
Your state has a form to fill out and have the truck inspected with if they allow it. Things like a kitchen; 120 volt conversion or lp gas; and rest room are usually required.
It is very state specific so it is hard for me to comment on the subject.

Yup, where it's allowed generally you need to have all the "facilities" in the sleeper so that it can function as an RV, or an RV body "permanently" attached (i.e. bolted) to the truck.

Don't know this for sure, but I also believe it needs to be used to tow an RV. You can't register it as an RV then pull a 40' lowboy with three tractors on it, or use it to chase after your Craigslist treasures.

Hello Jim , You had better ask more questions than that , the picture of the post above you with Freightliner Race car Hauler WILL NOT fly with RV plates even if it has a Kitchen in it because the race car is a BUSINESS because it makes money supposedly so COMMERCIAL PLATES are what you will get . Thanks Tony

390.3(f) Exceptions. Unless otherwise specifically provided, the rules in this subchapter do not apply to -

(f)(3) The occasional transportation of personal property by individuals not for compensation nor in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise;

Even with the Guidance below, supplied by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, hobbyists are being stopped and cited by enforcement officers.

Question 21: Does the exemption in §390.3(f)(3) for the “occasional transportation of personal property by individuals not for compensation nor in the furtherance of a commercial enterprise” apply to persons who occasionally use CMVs to transport cars, boats, horses, etc., to races, tournaments, shows or similar events, even if prize money is offered at these events?

Guidance: The exemption would apply to this kind of transportation, provided: (1) The underlying activities are not undertaken for profit, i.e., (a) prize money is declared as ordinary income for tax purposes, and (b) the cost of the underlying activities is not deducted as a business expense for tax purposes; and, where relevant; (2) corporate sponsorship is not involved. Drivers must confer with their State of licensure to determine the licensing provisions to which they are subject.

It is probably best to carry actual copies of the law with you.

I view it this way: There is only 1 persons opinion that matters (if your rig qualifies as an RV or not). That person be the vehicle enforcement officer that stops you and checks you out. I suggest you check with them and your license branch as to what qualifies as an RV. I doubt that a 5-gallon bucket and a 12v. coffee pot will qualify

Yes whip out those rules and see how far it gets you when the DOT pulls out the book and shows you.......

§ 383.3: Applicability.
(b) The exceptions contained in § 390.3(f) of this subchapter do not apply to this part. The employers and drivers identified in § 390.3(f) must comply with the requirements of this part, unless otherwise provided in this section.

My neighbors have three Motorhomes on Class 8 trucks. Bought them used, pull race cars behind them in enclosed trailers. Have RV plates. I am sure they deduct all expenses. Saw another one with 2 antique tractors on a trailer behind it. It was over a 1000 miles from home. Looks like RV plates is the way to go. And I doubt they file quarterly fuel reports.:) Vic
