Heard that same tired old song every year for 20 years. Never amounted to a hill of beans. A few states had a FEW scales open 24 hrs for the week, but look at the odds.....
10,000 trucks passing through per day. maybe 10 or 12 DOT cops on duty at the scale.
They can check MAYBE 5% of the trucks passing through. Best defense - stay legal, and go about your business. Always worked for me.

same here been driving over 22 years and not one time been pulled into when a 72 hour inspection has been going on, hardly anymore activity than normal, just a big get together for d.o.t. cops probably. Where you think they would get extra cops from?

Extra cops are not really extra. Here in PA, all of the state cops are DOT trained. Just offered them a little overtime, and free donuts, and there they are. Unfortunately, the whole DOT thing is not about safety. It's about MONEY. How does it make the road safer to take hundred dollar bills away from a working man over a marker light? And if the guy's brakes are not up to snuff, how is it safe to fine him and then send him down the road? Then when the livestock hauler comes along. he gets flagged through - because the cops don't want to get dirty inspecting him! Once in Virginia, I was stopped at a scale and told that I had a loose bolt on my 5th wheel. Conveniently, there was a repair truck there who was happy to tighten the bolt for $25. Funny, they could not find anything else wrong. Then in Tennessee, the cop checks your brake adjustment with a 9/16 wrench. Nothing more than a money racket.

I can not agree that all PA staties are DOT trained. I do not know the whole layout but having been on the scene of a rolled truck while we were hauling silage... We had to wait on DOT officer to come deal with the situation. The first trooper had no idea about commercial vehicles and called for a DOT trooper

ALL of the new crop of "cadets" entering the force are being DOT trained. Maybe some of the old timers are not, but one "untrained" trooper does not invalidate my statement. I live here, and drove 18-wheelers for 21 years. I got this right from the troopers themselves.

hate to disagree, however all means all. If one is not DOT then all is not possible.

If they really wanted to catch something, why let anyone know they are beefing up patrols?? It's simply a money grab, just like the "click it or ticket" I am always amazed by how many people drive right into those well posted traps, then complain when they get a ticket....
