Getting drivers attention that text on the road

I think its almost impossible to tell if a driver is texting---you have to see there phone and their fingers typing letters--so if your not in a very high seat its improbable to see that--and of course you are guilty of distracted driving trying to observe that

I find them easy to spot. The car is weaving and the drivers head is down. It is somewhat unsettling to see them coming at you. State of NH just passed a law to get their attention with a hefty fine.

TUSHEA! I spend more time on the road in a truck than I care to admit ,and it is a rampant issue here in Va. When I see them weaving in and out of traffic and just under the speed limit, there is a good chance I know what they are up to.

It is not only against the law to text ,it is against the the law to talk on a cell phone, unless you have a hands free device in WV. And yes it is being enforced and they can stop you for that offense only. First offense fine is not too bad, second offense BAD.

(quoted from post at 16:35:57 04/18/14) Air horns get their attention!

I don't think air horns would work. Don't you think that most of those who text while driving are also those who keep their car radios cranked so that they can aggravate people in traffic?

i put my semi next to the white line, then blow air horn and move to the right, to let them think they are in my lane, then watch them swrve to the left, thats wakes them up...lol

I see that law getting challanged and struck down depending on how it is worded if it says texting is banned, and cell phone use is ok on hands free.

There is hands free texting.

My phone will read me an incoming text thru bluetooth and let me verbally reply. all with never looking down or moving a hand. It's all speach based.

just like talking on the phone or to another person in the car.

how is the law worded?

I am pretty sure that it specifies no hand operated devices so your blue tooth would be OK.

Not that I advocate distracted driving. It's just sometimes lawmakers don't keep up with technology when they push a law thru.

Heck. one of my trucks, the radio is bluetooth, so all my calls or texts that come in go thru the speakers when the phone rings or dings.. etc.

All the cell phone companies have "campaigns" to get their customers to stop texting while driving. WHAT A JOKE!!!! They are only doing it for political and legal cover.

If they were serious about stopping it, they could have their devices not be able to send or receive a text if they were moving at over X miles per hour.

I saw one young gal that I think got the message tonight. Her car was about a foot from a light pole but up on the grass over the curb and smack dab right in the middle of her car was a broken off fire hydrant. She was about to enter an intersection when she hit it.

I see as many truckers weaving and using the phones as yuppies. I think the law should be turn them off if the motor is running.

People in general are not going to accept having their devices disabled, whether it's by law or by the provider, and they certainly won't do it voluntarily.

All we can hope is the stupid people off themselves through their own stupidity without taking too many innocent people with them.

The same people calling for new/more laws to prevent stupidity are often the same ones crying when it's a law that affects them in some inconvenient way.
It's getting bad. Every day it seems big brother is coming up with new ways to keep us under control and to keep us from poking our own eye out.
It's wrong in my eyes. Laws that forbid this or that simply "for the better good" are wrong. It's like other laws like blight ordinances. Telling people what they can and can't have on their own land.
People are gonna be dumb. That's just how it is. Like gun restrictions won't stop the crazies, cell phone laws won't stop some idiot from texting and driving and the rest of us shouldn't be punished by the acts of a few. I don't text and drive. Thats dumb That's not the founding principles of this country. Rant over.

Myself, I appreciate some help and protection for my friends and family. It is unnerving to see a car coming straight at you and as it gets closer you see that the drivers head is down. This is life and death, and it is impaired driving.

You are NOT being safety conscious. WHAT IF they have serious accident / get killed because you scared the beejeebers with that AIR HORN? Want to smile and be happy about that?

I'm a retired 18 wheeler driver. A "toot" with either electric or air horn is much better.
