Check Trailer Warning Comes On When No Trailer Is Hitched

Have a '05 F-250 with the "Tow Command" system and the "Check Trailer" warning comes on when there no trailer hooked on. A guy following me said that the brake lights come at the same time that happens. Called the local Ford Dealer and they said to bring it in. That would be like giving them a open checkbook. It does not do it all the time, but it seems to be getting worse. Any idea's? It only has 33,500 miles on it.

I would start by opening up the trailer plug receptacles, look for corroded connections, loose wires, etc. that could be causing a "cross over" connection between the terminals.

Also follow the wiring harness from the receptacle forward, check it for damage, crushed, cut, burned, etc.

Ours does the same thing. Didn't know bout the brake lights. It is now in the dealers shop and was told it will be until the end of March. Part backordered. Something with the urea system. They will not let it out the door nor pay me for my lost usage. Think I'll turn it over to the war department.

Don't know what the problem is or was,but some of the 05s did have problems and some didn't.The ones I know of were fixed in half hr.to an hour.

KC, if you Google it you will find it is a common problem with the ford tow command.
There is a sensor that has bad seals from the weather and it willneed to be repaced.
I had it on 07 f-350 oldiron29

Old Iron, I have not had those problems yet with the trailer brake controller on my '06 350, but I would like to head them off If the problem is coming. I have googled tow command and have not been able to find anything about a seal. Can you give more specific Info please?

sensor was on the master brake cyl. on fire wall.
Google it lots of info on web about it. I do not have part #. oldiron29

Old Iron What is "it" to google?

Without knowing the DTC(S) stored, first thing I'd recommend is thoroughly clean the socket on the truck. Moisture in the socket can cause cross feeding and confuse the TBC module. Use compressed air (wear your safety glasses) to clean any moisture out. If you can find out what codes are present, it might be an easy repair.
