2001 dodge 1500 front brake upgrade

we have a '01 dodge 1500 ext cab that got a 2500 8
lug rearend years ago. the truck has been GREAT and
we want to upgrade to 2500 8 lug front brakes. The
two spares are a pain and our trailers are 8 lug and
bigger brakes would be a plus. has anyone actually
done this?

Never actually done it, but sounds doable. I would start with looking at a 2500, taking measurements of the frame, control arms, spindles, steering gear, tie rods, drag link, any and everything involved in swapping out the components. I'm sure there will be more to this than just changing the hubs and rotors.

If all looks well, start checking the local salvage yards for a donor truck. I would try to find a yard that will let you pull your own parts so you can get everything you will need, and you will probably be making more than one trip.

Also, just because it is a 2500, doesn't mean all 2500's are the same. You'll need to find out what the front axle weight rating is to be sure the wheels are the same as your rears.

I think by 01 all 25 and 3500s ran the Dana 60 up front, so you'll just need to swap the whole axle over. And remember what year truck the axle came out of for when you buy brake parts.

If you can find a front Dana 44 in a 2500, it would probably still be easiest (and quickest) to just swap out the axle.

The only difference in the wheels on the 2-nd gen Dodge trucks is rear drum vs rear disk brakes. Wheels off a rear-disk truck won't fit over rear drums.
