chevy 2500 in tank pump

mine is starting to make a hum when running, you have to listin real close to hear it, truck has 104,000 miles when should I start to worry about replacing it ??

Thats hard to say it might run for some time and might go out the next time you use it. BIL came to my house with his 98 GMC pickup( was running fine) went to go home and wouldn't start. The pump went out with out any warning.

That's like flipping a coin, my old pickup split a hose inside the tank with about 225k on the original pump, replaced it anyway while apart.
Got a 97 GMC Jimmy with 165k on it and that pump is high dollars but I'm looking for another pkup.to replace both of these so fingers are crossed.
I think a new fuel filter a year will keep those pumps running longer

Bought a '99 Sub. w/93,000 on it with very audible whine and it lasted to 140,000 w/o problems. No different than any with elect in-tank pumps. Brand new ones might only go 40,000 or be bad when new. Have had that happen. Get a new one and leave it in the truck so if you get stranded out of town all you have to pay is labor. Doesn't take a dealership to change one.

if your gonna change the pump, the easiest way we found is to remove the bed. 6 to 8 bolts hold the bed down, remove the 3 screws that hold the filler neck to the bedside, there is a ground strap up toward the cab on the front of the box, and unplug the tail lite harness at the rear. it saves trying to drain the tank of fuel, break the bolts that hold the tank straps, fighting upside down with the fuel line disconnects. we have a "bracket that attaches to the top of the bed and use an engine hoist to lift the bed off. 2 guys can do it easy. steady the bed so it dosnt bump the back of the cab.

Add an inline pump. Airtex E8248 is a high pressure pump that takes all the strain off the in-tank pump. I mounted mine on the rail after the 4th pump failed to maintain the minimum pressure. Still going 2 years later. It's wired to turn on and off with the in-tank pump.
