So these German buggers had some issues? Just curious what they were. Mine has 160,000 on it and will get used regularly for hauling 10,000# and under. Possibly more weight, but only rarely. Should I put an extra quart in and plan for its eventual death? Another tranny is an option, but on a budget here.

I would put a pint or so of lucas in there. I haven't heard of metal parts being too lubed . Maybe the black label one that's synthetic. That's too bad your a trader now I can never look at you the same. LOL. When do we adjust the fuel for more smoke .... ummmmm better power? Trucker

The old Ford is contsantly nickel & diming me while the ugly old Dodge sits out back and mocks it. Bout time I put the shoe on the other foot. If I'm going to keep hauling for folks, I'll have to get legit and legal. As for the F250, she'll be mine as long as she still runs! Got lots of tractor pulls to get to yet. Unfortunately I've been thinning the yellow herd. Also quit the CAFPC club and not running for secretary again so I can pull more and work less. Hopefully I'll be traveling to see some new shows and pulls.

The more I dig into it, the more I realize that. People hear things, but don't read things. Not that I'm thrilled with the regulations, but they can be easily understood. Too bad the cops don't always know the law.

Lots of folks have had trouble with the 5-speed Getrags; my '93 dually has a little over twice the miles as yours and has never missed a lick. A couple of years ago, I had the clutch replaced and asked the mechanic to check out a small transmission leak; he said a nut had backed off a little; he replaced it and a seal and no more trouble. I'm a retired farmer/cattleman and pulled a 32 ft gooseneck cattle trailer and a 27 ft lowboy all over the Southeastern U.S. The thing is totally stock and the only things....except wear items......that've been replaced are the radiator and the starter. It was slow off the mark with the loaded cattle trailer behind it, but after the turbocharger spooled up, it would run with the big boys. I've got a new truck that I usually drive, but I don't see ever getting rid of the old dually................(I recommend the turbo diesel forum; don't have a link, but it's easy to find.)

The sole issue with the 5-speed Getrag is associated with is the 5th gear idler that backs off by itself and you lose 5th gear.
This was the subject of a bulletin, but it usually happened after warranty expired. I had a 93 Dodge that the gear loosened after Warranty expired and I complained to the regional rep. They split the repair cost 50/50 with me. It helped ease the pain a little.

Your thinking about cumminsforum dot com. Very good site for info on keeping these older rigs going.
I have a 97 Ram 2500 cummins, beefed up auto. 101,xxx miles and I plan to drive her forever if I can. Nothing like no payment and unbeatable reliability.

I suppose there's a "fix" to that problem? Loctite the nut? It might pay to fix it ahead of time if possible.
